What do you do if you want to become a successful information security analyst but don't know where to start?

Definitely start with the basics! You have to understand how computers work and communicate. If you are pursuing a degree go for an IT/computer science degree and then specialize in cybersecurity/infosec. If you are doing self study there are so many resources out there. Cisco skills for all had great paths that are free and will teach you the basics, tryhackme has great learning paths. Build VM at home and play in there. Do NOT skip the basics.

Start gaining knowledge of where your strengths lie. If you are a self-learner, buy some cybersecurity books along with open-source tools to build out your core knowledge. If you are a visual learner, take courses from various platforms such as Udemy, Coursera, etc. If you prefer being taught cyber theory then research respectable, competent, and industry-recognized programs. All in all, you must understand how you will operate in gaining foundational skills before presenting yourself to a potential employer.

Tinker at home. Information Security has become SOOOO broad, there are all kinds of niches to be found. Google, follow experts in the field, check out Internet Storm Center, pick up a book on security. All are great resources. Join a local chapter of ISACA, ISC2, or ISSA. Treat your home as YOUR business and learn to protect it. A mentor is always a great thing, but don't be discouraged if you struggle finding one. Become comfortable with failing and trying again until you find a solution.

There is no A-Z step. Focus on your education with an IT aspect and basics of Information security. Start working in an IT function to understand the fundamentals of IT infrastructure/systems and then develop your capabilities. Once you start working you will better understand your areas of interest in Information Security which you can then develop your expertise.

Well, here's my take, straight from my own journey: Dive into hands-on experience ASAP. Seek out internships or entry-level gigs where you can get your hands dirty with real-world scenarios. Networking? Absolutely crucial. Rub elbows with the pros, soak up their insights like a sponge. Remember, in this game, experience speaks volumes. So, get out there and start making those connections while sharpening your skills. It's all about getting your feet wet and learning on the fly.

In my experience, By gaining experience through internships, entry-level jobs, or even CTF competitions, you'll encounter real-world challenges that can't be replicated in a textbook. These experiences teach you critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and how to adapt your knowledge to ever-changing situations.

Attend events, be active in forum, connect with experts and build your network. When you have a network of experts, they will help you to find a way.

In my experience, Networking allows you to connect with peers and experts who can offer different perspectives, share valuable insights, and help you find solutions to challenging problems. It's like having a network of cybersecurity warriors watching your back, ready to jump in and assist whenever needed.

In my opinion, By staying up-to-date on the latest attack methods and vulnerabilities, you can anticipate these threats and take steps to defend yourself before they strike.
