There are those phases when you can't think of a sentence that makes sense. Then there are moments when I can't type as fast as my associative thoughts are racing through my head. My simple trick is to make little sketches and scraps of words that I type into my smartphone wherever I am. I then use them to create my texts.

If you are writing material similar in content to your colleagues, there may be opportunities to publish your work in a themed journal, collection, or book with them. Talking to others about your writing and research can lead to more avenues for publication.

To thrive as a freelance writer, networking is critical: Engage Regularly: I actively participate in writing forums and LinkedIn groups to connect with industry peers. Attend Events: Whether online or in-person, I attend workshops and seminars to meet potential clients and fellow writers. Offer Value: I focus on providing helpful insights and support in discussions, which helps build meaningful relationships. Follow-Up: I make it a point to keep in touch with contacts, ensuring I'm always on the lookout for opportunities. Reflect on Interactions: Regular reflection on networking experiences helps refine my approach, making future connections even more impactful.

Join professional groups focused on your industry or niche. Attend their conferences to learn more about current trends and for valuable networking opportunities. Look for local chapters of these groups or members in your area and plan meet-ups. Join Facebook groups related to writing or to your specific industry or interest AND be active in them. Talk about what type of writing you do and let people know you are open to new work. Most writers are happy to refer jobs that they are too busy to take on or are out of their wheelhouse.

Some of my best and longest-term clients have come from networking and getting referrals. This doesn't have to mean direct marketing. For example, commenting on social and providing relevant/valuable information to add to the conversation gets noticed. It can start a conversation and lead to opportunities.

Networking overall is great but three bits of advice: - Time is a limited resource. Be picky about who you wish to connect with. - Give direction to your networking. E.g. if you’re writing about design, connect with people related to graphic design, typography, graffiti, UI/UX, and then move to niches which are more broadly related to your work. - Hyper-specialising is not a strength, it is a weakness. The more wholistic your knowledge is, the better you will write.

Network with other writers and potential clients, continuously seek out new opportunities, and always meet deadlines with high-quality work.
