Experimental research requires a lot of mechanical skills, and like in lots of skillsets, the 10000 h of training rule applies, but this time a very polyvalent skillset is required. This is to be combined with a high capacity to innovate i.e. to find ideas, check their usefullness, and build on the best ones. But when you are independent, the next skill that you need to develop is the networking skill, which is mabe even contradictory to a high level r&d approach.
