What do you do if you want to advance your career as a project manager using Servant Leadership?

I find it very difficult to answer the question on how to advance your carier as a project manager using servent leadership, as the question it self goes against the servant leadership philosophy. I think you need to start by asking your self the question "am I a serving leader or a selfserving leader?"

Identify yourself in the position where you are and where you want to go in the mid and long term. This will help you to know exactly what are the next steps to take towards the goal.

Empathy and Listening: Listen to your team members and understand their strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations. This builds trust and allows you to tailor support and development opportunities. When your stakeholders have trust in you, your project has the potential to achieve wonders!"

Active listening is one of the most remarkable skills of a talented Leader. Why? because without this skill you're not able to be the perfect man in the middle, your principal responsibility.

Project managers are the best suited to use servant leadership! Typically, they don't have "power" over their team members, so they need to form parterships. They are typically getting pulled in different directions, so being transparent and giving them autonomy will help them buy-in. It can be difficult to lead without authority, but when done right, it is a beautiful thing. One resource that i found helpful about 5 years ago was a book called Master the Matrix by Susan Finerty (Zelmanski). It doesn't deal with servant leadership directly, but alot of the essentials line up!

If you want to go to servant leadership managing a project, is good to make suggestions to the leads of the verticals you are working with. This will empower them and also put some responsibility on them. Narrowing questions that maybe are hard to answer is one of the good ways for getting it. "How can we get there from your expert point of view" is a perfect way to approach uncertainity.

Never forget that project managers are people who should orchestrate all the things surrounding a project. This includes a variety of things such as risks, mitigations, activities, and schedules. Here using servant leadership will reduce the workload and will remove the potential bottleneck with pears. One idea is to be proactive involving experts in areas since the beginning, delegating authority.

Never forget: servant leaders are behind the people, just being grateful and also "reminding" the situations and potential conflicts in the future. So one idea is to "envision" people towards the goals, and suggest rituals and protocols.
