What do you do if stakeholders' priorities and expectations clash?

Encourage compromise and negotiation, and involve a mediator if needed. Document decisions and regularly review priorities. As a last resort, escalate conflicts to higher management. This approach fosters understanding, aligns efforts, and ensures project success despite conflicting expectations.

It is important when these conflicts arise, that you send an email with a list of tasks assigned to you and the priority in which you have arranged your day and then ask for approval in writing and/or re-prioritization. If the question of time becomes a secondary issue, arrange a quick meeting with your boss to discuss the standard time it takes to do each activity and if the conflict still exists at this point, do one task at a time until completed. This is where maintaining your own metrics is critical, because systems track your work, inclusive approximate turnaround timeframes. Ways to optimize and streamline may come up in the discussion at this point - take those conversations in positive stride for best impact for everybody involved.

In my experience, a healthy organisation wouldn’t bring it to a point of clash especially when it comes to stakeholders priorities and expectations. Stakeholders ultimately expect returns, but then they would need to understand that it is possible to get there only by prioritising the need for strengthening the foundations of the business. And this takes time. If they are made to understand this, expectations can be made more realistic with a definite time line and strengthening the business would become the priority.

One thing I've found helpful is to write it all down, either in a table, or a diagram, or anything that will serve as a productive point of discussion. Identify places and topics where there is agreement, and highlight those. That's also a good place to start so folks feel like they're on the same team or working toward the same goal.

If you managed to find a common point of interest between all stakeholders, you will not struggle to connect them all to the reach the desired goal.

Personally, I don't favor random brainstorming. I have found it to be more productive to visualize the end/goal first, and keep suggestions on that path. There are several other options to brainstorming. Spend most of your time defining the problem instead of brainstorming. Once you truly understand what you're solving, pathways to success become more evident.

One important point is to create an environment where everyone opens up for a discussion. In any conflict, it is seen that everyone holds their ego and do not open up for resolution.

Transparency and regular communication can help build trust. - Encourage stakeholders to find common ground and be open to compromise.

Listening is crucial. Truly actively listen and understand what is being said behind the words. People reveal themselves and their needs become clear, even when they are unspoken.
