What do you do if self-assessments are not accurately reflecting an entrepreneur's performance?

In my own opinion, self assessment is good to analyze performance in Entrepreneurship but it's not the best. Here are my claims: (1) Self assessment often come with a biased mindset because you assume you are doing the best thing based on your assumption which is wrong. (2) Self assessment often hide your area of weakness but external feedback help spot them out. (3) Self assessment promote self which is not bad but overtime you become overconfident because you've been assessed multiple times and you don't need to do much again. This often lead to complacency. Lastly the best way to self assessment in Entrepreneurship is to allow constructive criticism and negative feedbacks joined with your own assessment.

If self-assessments fail to accurately reflect an entrepreneur's performance, it's essential to diversify the sources of data used for evaluation. Relying solely on self-assessments may overlook blind spots or biases, so incorporating feedback from various stakeholders such as customers, mentors, and peers provides a more comprehensive perspective. These external viewpoints offer valuable insights, helping to validate assumptions, identify areas for improvement, and set realistic goals. Leveraging tools like surveys, interviews, and analytics enables entrepreneurs to gather diverse data points and make informed decisions about their performance and strategies.

Supplement self-assessments with objective metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to gain a more comprehensive understanding of your performance. Objective metrics provide tangible data points that can offer insights into various aspects of your business, such as sales revenue, customer acquisition costs, conversion rates, and customer satisfaction scores.

Implement a 360-degree feedback mechanism where feedback is collected from various sources, including supervisors, peers, subordinates, and even external stakeholders. This comprehensive approach provides a well-rounded perspective on your performance, strengths, and areas for development.

Self assessments often reflect more of what a person values, than actual skills. Most people will rate themselves lower in areas important to them, such as public skilling or analytics, and continually seek training and feedback. While their real weaknesses lie in areas of blind spots of or where too little attention is given. To counter that, I like to ground the self assessment starting with a review of the business, then ask whether there seems to be discrepancies or surprises. This also allows for more actionable feedback and decisions once the assessment is complete.

When the rubber meets the road, the reality check happens. Similarly, when an entrepreneur starts their operations, the reality check occurs, and it wouldn't be unusual for this to be noticed. Self-assessment is your perception, and performance is a mix of realities—perceived, influenced, and real. Start by accepting it and look at the gaps.
