What do you do if you run into technical issues during video production?

It pays to have a backup. Spare camera, field recorder, mics, cables, anything that might go wrong. Of course this isn't always possible. But reducing the potential for disaster can save your reputation; time is money. I speak from experience having not followed this advice.

First and foremost.. Stay calm. There are many people around you, that have no clue what is going on. If you panic, they will panic even more. Try to keep the production crew updated on the situation and what is happening to fix things. Don't get caught up in just fixing the issue, but think of a plan B (yes, you should have one). And when the issue was fixed, or a workaround was implemented, inform the crew again. If you have a chance, take a few minutes after the production to recap and tell the production staff what happened, how it was fixed. Discuss with your crew if there was anything you and them could have done to avoid it, and if there is anything you need to improve in the process for the future. Never blame individuals in public!

Best lesson I ever learned (the hard way, when *I* was the cause of a major technical issue on a difficult shoot in DR Congo): my director/producer just responded calmly with one simple, direct question—"Does it affect our ability to shoot?" Forget blame, forget why, just keep your eye on what actually needs to happen: making your day AND keeping your team focused and aligned. I had the opportunity to pay this forward years later when I was in his position, and it really paid off. It reorients the person responsible for the issue into being invested WITH you in solving the problem, instead of their own guilt/self-consciousness/CYA.

For me - it's never the "mistake or problem" -- it's what happens AFTER that. Pre-production is (usually) 80% of any of my projects (not Docs.). We lost power to a panel of monitors once during a live multi-cam show. Ended up directing "blind" for almost 10 minutes -- but because of great prep/cam notes on script/and really talented (handpicked) camera Ops - we got through it. No finger pointing -- just fix -- move on. (with a little bit of shouting :)

This helps immensely with identifying the problem and actually could help gain more knowledge on what you are working on. Sometimes you would even learn something extra along the way

It’s always worth taking a breath and considering what might be the issue. A few minutes lateral thinking can often overcome any problems. Also rebooting is a great place to start!

En un proceso creativo y en un deadline ajustado suele trabajarse muchas horas sin pausa en el mismo punto creativo, mi consejo: pausa, cambia de entorno, resuelve otros puntos que puedan solucionarse más fácil y retoma con una perspectiva mas tranquila, al estar en el mismo punto del proyecto mucho tiempo suelen pasar por encima de peque?os errores que se dan por resolvidos y serán significativos el el producto final.

This will not only keep you on your A game, you'll never make the same mistake twice. It's impossible to keep all that you've learned in your head so write it down!

I streamed live from an event called Manifest and the internet didn't work! I learned from a friend that you can record to StreamYard directly to your computer without wifi; known by a lot of people but good hack. So record and then upload the files later. That way you don't have terrible video quality.

En revanche, concernant la résolution d'un incident, je ne parlerai pas de célébration mais de partage de l'expérience. Stay calm and give the technicians who are troubleshooting some space. This is not the first time they have seen an issue mid-show, and it's not the last. As hard as it can be, your only option is to be patient while we resolve the issue as quickly as possible. This is not the time to assign blame. If you are constantly interrupting the technician to ask what happened and how long it will take to fix, you are just distracting the only people who can save the day.

Write a list of all the things it could be and how you can test those things in isolation. Present solutions with clear pros/cons to the person who is paid to make that call. Ask for input from your team. If it goes wrong, they're much more likely to stay up late to fight their way through it if they have some say on the matter. Postmortem. Find out why it happened. What can we do to make sure we reduce the risk of it happening again? build a failover plan and a procedure to deal with it next time it happens so it is not even a stress any more when it does. If you didn't learn, then that's the failure here, not the incident itself. No matter how much you plan, things will go wrong. It's how you deal with it that matters!

Es evidente que los problemas pueden aparecer en cualquier trabajo, pero una buena preproducción y preparación del equipo antes de salir es la mejor decisión que vas a tomar, no puedes (o no debes) estar haciendo pruebas en el trabajo. Es como ir a un restaurante y que sirvan al cliente un plato sin haberlo probado nunca el cocinero, en cambio en esta profesión estamos permitiendo el intrusismo de gente sin preparación que piensan que todo vale. Hay que demostrar al cliente que todo está controlado desde el primer minuto. Y en caso de saltar la alarma tu saber hacer será tu mejor ayuda. Nunca pares de formarte pero no lo hagas en el directo o en la grabación, si estás cobrando ya no eres un becario, eres un profesional.
