One of the most important things I found helpful when working in a remote environment is to have regular 1 on 1's with my team where we could have open and honest conversations about how we're feeling, what we are struggling with and where we might need support. In these conversations, it's critical to lead with vulnerability which helps the other person open up also. What I have found is that whenever I opened up about my own struggles, more often than not the other person was going through something similar and we could find ways to help each other out. This may sound overly simplified, but most companies that struggle with collaboration, teamwork, or other due to "remote working" is because they are not embracing remote working and they're trying to do things as they did "in office" in a remote setting. It wont work. Collaboration and teamwork is done differently in the office, it can be just as effective in a remote setting, but needs to be done differently. Examples: monitoring active/away status, the equivalent of monitoring how long someone left their desk in the office. You do that in office, you'll quickly lose trust and collaboration and teamwork suffer. However, in remote setting its common for managers to fixate on Active/Away status, this is having the same negative impact.
