What do you do if a programmer's attention to detail is lacking?

There could be 2 kinds of problems - Lacks problem statement understanding - Ask about the corner cases to ensure if he/she understands the problem statement correctly. Also, ask to prepare detailed testcases with focus on good/bad inputs to program and failure scenarios. Preparing test cases early, allow brainstorming of all the scenarios of the problem domain. Detailed documentation is the key. 2. Lacks in architecture, design and programming practices - Ask design specific questions like modularity, reusability, separation of concerns etc. Focus on design review process. Ask to compare problem at hand with other similar existing problems and what kind of architecture and design patterns are used in those.

If a programmer is lacking attention to detail he/she has to be called privately and be constructively ask why he/she is having that issue. The issue could be personal or the work environment itself. Once the root cause of it is resolved I believe every other thing will come to normal.

It is important to have an open dialogue with a programmer in this need. This will help you have an idea and perception of how to assist out, and play a vital role in another developer's life.

Explain the importance of detailed work. Give an example of a sub-par part vs the impression of an exceptional one. (The value of confidence) vs the appearance of being lazy.

As we always think, other are robots ??, if we set expectations than maybe everything will work. As we know that's not always the case. What am I implying? Follow the rule stay on course will not make new invention. Someone needs to go crazy ?? to bring great invention. One important thing with my experience is that don't focus on the issue jump to something else or just go for coffee and chat with colleagues ??, it will bring the focus back.

Tools are great for programming but it doesn't make us better programmers, I am thinking was there tools in time when the programmers wrote programs like window or mac! Like linters or per made functions.
