In an unfamiliar application, exploratory testing is my go-to. Without having a script in hand (documented test cases), I review each and every section of every page of my application from header to footer. I check functionality, UI and recently tried my hands on security basics. It has helped me in uncovering high risk bugs and more importantly understanding the application.
