Phrased differently, do not wait for a mentor but push your limits with what you can do. And be seen pushing those limits in various communities at work and surrounding it (professional societies, volunteering, etc.). Then with time and effort, you should attract opportunities for mentorship. And then the need to establish a relationship with them will become critical.
