I truly enjoyed my PMBOK CAP certification course and exam because it incorporates a crucial 'entry point' to change and getting things done: fix your 'meeting structure' by getting weekly 'rythm' on your project(s) ; get rid of 'management by emails'; Scrum (daily stand-ups?) probably not feasible, but 'agile' management of 'workstreams' and stakeholders can and should be done.

From my point of view agility in Programm Management ist not a bunch of toolsets or methods. It is capability of humans to react on external or internal threats. Its a general attitude which you will get when you grow. To react efficiently and effectively a certain independance and probably distance to the problem is necessary.

We should always talk about Risk- AND Opportunity Managent, not only "riskmanagement". By the way any R&O Plan does not help if the team ist not flexible, not agile and not analyzing deeply the cause of the issue and then is in the position independently decide about necessary measures.

Most teams and programmes run into difficulties when there is a lack of clarity and the end goal is unclear because people start to draw their own conclusions. Communication is key to suceess, the success of any programme depends how the management and leadership is communicating to stakeholders.

Feedback can always guide you from where you have been and where you want to go. Even in a rushed decision situation, take the time to review or recall the event. How do we keep from being placed in this situation again? Self reflect and ask for your teams thoughts. Was there something that I missed and can do better next time for the team/project? I am not a team of one and need my team to be on the same page. Open real discussion to check that the team understands why we are performing the task. What is their stake in the process? What value do they bring to our team? How do their individual skillset get us to the end. People need to know if they are doing good and where to improve. Just like I need to know, as well.

The large objective of the program, managing the big picture, going for progress vs perfection (within acceptable boundaries, of course) needs to be embedded in the program management team culture. For example, when these types of events occur, I have found that people can sometimes be surprised and delay the necessary decision making to quickly pivot and change course, if the appropriate planning has not occurred. Planning how decisions will be made can be a major risk mitigation strategy when flexibility is needed.
