Leaders may not even be visible in the ultimate success of an endeavor because their most critical role is behind the scene advancing others and their impact not ours.
One thing I have found helpful, is to break the word leadership into leader and ship. In a ship, there is one leader, the captain and there are the passengers each on a different mission with different goals but all depending on the captain, the leader to get them all to one destination where they can achieve their goals and objectives. I share my most recent experience in a ship and use my analogy to show how like a captain with his or her crew or team, I help those I lead to achieve the corporate goals of the organization while at the same time fulfilling their own individual goals. The STAR technique is truly a superstar in its own right and has served me well while assessing candidates. It is a brilliant tool to evaluate the tenacity of leadership because it helps understand the behaviours driving an individual's leadership approach. In all interviews the storyboard this technique paints helps assessors be a fly on the wall along with the candidate, which helps make one relate to situations better and makes for a more meaningful discussion. I strongly recommend that recruiters are trained in the art of STAR to help them grow out of the typical transaction mindset that most Talent Acquisition professionals limit themselves to and become Talent Advisors to their stakeholders instead.

I cannot stress the importance of authenticity and matching of leadership styles with the organization you are interviewing for. It took me some time to realize this fact. But, it leads to a happier outcome for both the candidate and the organization if there is a 'natural' cultural fit and not a forced one. Being authentic in your interview and speaking honestly and passionately about your leadership style will help the organization assess whether your would thrive in their culture and be able to accomplish the results they need. If you are not successful in a leadership interview, it is probably better as you may not be what they are looking for and may not appreciate your leadership style.
