Which type of testing is needed? Review the Test Strategy document that should identify the levels of testing and methods for each. Certainly test cases are needed and with it a table that defines which areas of the system each case will test. In some instances, automated testing may be called for especially with stress testing. Some of these tools are expensive and I have "rented" some for specific time periods vs. purchasing them. Finally, all these tests belong in a Regression Testing Vehicle which permits tests to be repeated depending on the span of system testing needed.
