What do you do if logical reasoning fails to solve a problem or make a decision?

Once logical reasoning failed me, I would fall on scientific methods of decision making, because they are methods that have been tried and tested to be. Even that I would still follow my intuition because we are both physical and spiritual beings. Therefore we cannot always look at our physical domains but I also listen to our intuitions which is the spiritual part in us. It should work out positively for making that right decision.

1- I consult with relevant stakeholders 2. I seek expert opinion 3- at times I acknowledge that some situations in life demand more empty than reasoning. 4- I try to understand the logic of the other party 5- some times it is more important for an idea to be moral and practical than rational that why I resort to moral reasoning. 6- Sometimes I step back, and wait for the right time and opportunity to communicate

Trusting intuition, considering emotions, fostering creativity, seeking input from others, conducting experiments, aligning with values, accepting uncertainty, and allowing time for reflection are all valuable strategies. By incorporating these approaches alongside logical analysis, one can navigate challenges more effectively and arrive at well-rounded solutions.

In the past, I’ve witnessed how some PGCE mentors in education would set a great example by showing their own curiosity to understand cross-cultural differences. When spaces are formed for safe discussions, I found that mentees would open up about their own experiences, be validated for them, our mentors would support our experiences with research, and then make a conclusive overarching summary. Just as students are subjective and inherently biased in their own way of thinking, teachers too are human beings who have strongly formed ideas. There is no one true answer, but there is one collectively agreed upon and (at least temporarily) one right step forward when open communication and genuine respect is fostered.

Every person goes with his own understanding, perception and goals. You should let them. You too have your own goal, own understanding. The conflict will arise only when you cross the paths and become a barrier. You may be doing it because you are a parent or teacher or an administrator. In that case your job is to present your frame of working with technical, emotional and futuristic aspects. If that does not go with flow you can't enforce your logic on anyone.

Exactly, I totally agree 100%. I personally done and took many decisions based on my gut feeling and intuition and most of those decisions went great for the business. Intuition is believed to tap into the subconscious mind, which processes vast amounts of information beyond our conscious awareness. Trusting your intuition can help access this wealth of knowledge and experience, providing valuable insights that logical reasoning may not capture. Intuition can detect subtle patterns or trends that may not be immediately apparent through logical analysis. Trusting your intuition allows you to recognize these patterns and make informed decisions based on them.

Once, designed a production gauging method on a sample size of 6, worked and still in service 30 years later. That’s intuition and a high rejection rate required re-work was eliminated. Once, designed an alternative approach to MPI, worked but not as effective as expected or better than the method at that time. That’s intuition, didn’t improve productivity and cost ~￡2k. Once you’ve collected diverse perspectives and had the appropriate conversations, you might have fuller picture of the problem at hand. However, you may still need concrete evidence to support your next step. Consider conducting a root cause analysis for your problem, and remind yourself that illogical concepts like people’s identities and emotions may be at the root of your problem and the tool for its solution!

One can’t overrule the place of logic in making critical decisions. However, when logic becomes less sufficient as the keys factors to help with the decisions we have to make, we need to consider other factors in a logical manner. Balance logic with a touch of emotions, some level of equity and equality will often come to play out in such situations. And that way, we will emo-logically do well with the decision and also bearing in mind the role of equity and equality.

If logic and calculations fail to solve a problem, I can think of two more ways to whats mentioned in this article; Resorting back to previous experiences and mapping inputs to outputs in emperical relation to obtain a sound solution And performing a risk analysis and mitigating failure factors to improve success rate.

Logic is somewhat like statistics, eg A man standing one leg each on 40 and 0 degree should be very comfortable as average temperature is 20 degree. Similar problems are encountered with logic, hence root assessment, perspective from various angles and discussions with stakeholders may help.
