What do you do if logical reasoning fails to evaluate and critique photographs?

I wouldn’t try to apply logical reasoning to any art form. Such as a photograph. It’s up for each individual to interpret the photograph and sometimes logic and reason don’t apply or shouldn’t be used to evaluate art work.

To me the most important aspect of a good photo is the storytelling. It doesn’t matter how technically a photo can be if there’s no story , no narrative or no emotion . Photos need to create a reaction. I don’t like perfection. The more poetic is the works the less logical reasoning might be tool to evaluate. Here technical features as composition, color or contrast (if B&W), while they must be used appropriately with intent, are not a end in themselves, they just are at the service of a narrative, which most times is read with the guts, not through logic

In my opinion, everything is related to a context. We must analyze everything from one point of view, from one reference. To carry out any analysis of a photographic work, it is essential that we study and understand the historical period of photography, the political and cultural context and several other factors that influence the artist's work.

My favorite images are the ones that create more questions than they answer. So... if logical reasoning 'solves' a photo, it's probably a pretty boring image. If I find myself asking what the context is, and trying to puzzle it out, then hey, now we're getting interesting! Kind of like this question prompt... Did an ai come up with this? It's such a bizarre and confusing question to ask about photography.

I say "seek context" because this question doesn't give any context about the criteria for one's evaluation and criticism of the photograph. At the very least, I need the context of the type of evaluation and type of criticism I'm being asked to perform. One type of evaluation would require one to seek historical information about the photograph; another type of evaluation might benefit from one trusting one's instinct. Once I have the context of the evaluation itself, and I know who my own readers are, I can make an informed decision about where to go from there.

Without context, an image can mean a lot but end up saying nothing. Context is an important piece of a story, and a photograph is nothing more than a story told through an image.

Context is key. Visuals which spread misinformation always lack context. That's why photographs in a newspaper never work with a caption or a story which goes along with it. That is also try for an Instagram post or any other photo sharing platform where there is no text along with the photo. Very few people from the audience can figure out if a photo has been doctored or not.

In my experience I understand that each person will always have a slightly different thought about any photograph when analyzed. This is normal and is related to each person's background, experiences and knowledge. Therefore, we will always have analyzes that may be similar but many others are completely different and this only contributes to the richness of feelings and messages that a photograph is capable of transmitting to us.

The art of photography is subjective; much of the craft of photography is not. When I judge images for the Professional Photographers of America, we use an objective framework (the Twelve Elements of a Merit Image) and make subjective judgements within that framework. Emotion, storytelling, and similar aspects will be up to interpretation by the viewer, but things like sharpness, color harmony, and composition often have objective criterial with which someone can identify things that work well (or work poorly) in a given photo.

The identity of the storyteller is always very important. If a photograph is being published by a person who lacks research or experience working with a particular subject, it always shows in a photo. When I look at someone's photography work, I always look at the background that they have. That is what brings credibility to the work of the photographer. Experience, academic background, or portfolio.

Although a photograph can be evaluated by the technical acuity used to take it, the result will always depend on the message it communicates, and in many cases that message will depend on who receives that image, their experiences, desires and points of view. In that case we fall into the realm of subjectivity.

Subjectivity of views is always there in every for of art. As individuals and communities we view and interpret images from our perspectives.

In my opinion, something fundamental to enriching our power of analysis and interpretation of photography is to be open and seek opinions different from ours. This way we can enrich our analyzes based on the knowledge and views of other people.

When you find yourself stuck in a purely logical assessment, talking about the photograph with friends, fellow enthusiasts, or online communities can offer diverse viewpoints. Hearing different interpretations can challenge your own perceptions and help you appreciate aspects of the photograph that you might have overlooked.

I always share with my work with a pair of fresh eyes ideally who would look at the photograph just as an audience. So ideally share your work with people who aren't photographers themselves. That way you will make sure that the story you are trying to tell is actually reaching the intended goal or not.

In my experience, one thing that can happen is to change your opinion a little or add more things when you allow yourself to reflect on photography for a longer period of time. This way it is possible to better absorb certain sensations and create a more refined meaning for each work.

This exercise always helps us clarify issues that are not issues at the time they are raised. This applies to almost everything in life, even photography. However, unfortunately we do not always have the element that is most needed to reflect deeply: time. We need time to be able to calmly analyze and evaluate a photograph.

Although photography transcends any language, the observation and the perception of the audience always matters. A photograph taken a thousand miles away being exhibited in say America can be observed in a thousand ways and is totally up to the awareness which the audience already has about an issue or a cause. Sometimes orientalism can really affect the goal of a visual for example.

Always discuss outwardly to gain fresh and unique insights and subjective opinions. -Reflect on personal biases and assumption. Photography is not just about capturing images, it implies a story, evoking emotions, and mainly preserving those moments in time, which will make you look back in time, when you watch those images. It's also a powerful medium that inspires, educate and connect us in various forms of characters and life's way around us.
