What do you do if you lack confidence in asking for larger donations in fundraising?

To overcome a lack of confidence in asking for larger donations, I'd focus on preparation and practice. Start by thoroughly researching potential donors and crafting compelling narratives that align with their interests. Role-playing scenarios with colleagues or mentors can help build confidence and refine delivery. Remember, each ask is an opportunity to share our organization's mission and impact, not just solicit funds. Embrace feedback and learn from each interaction to continuously improve. Confidence grows with experience and preparation, so keep practicing and believing in the value of our cause.

I fill my cup up with others experience and turn to those who I value. I look at friends, networking friends, and others in a similar position to mine with experience and a larger nonprofit to approach about ideas. This way I can ask them what worked in the past and get an honest opinion about my approach. I do not want my first “pitch” to be on a large donor.

Imagine this: Donor: "So, how will my donation be used?" You (the fundraising rockstar): "Thanks for asking! Your generous contribution will go directly towards providing clean water to a village in need. Last year, donations like yours helped us build 10 wells, giving access to clean water to over 500 families. Can you imagine the impact your donation could have?" Mic drop! By being a walking encyclopedia of your cause, you'll be well-equipped to answer any question and inspire donors to give generously.

This suggestion is going to be a little different, but I would say show your passion and tell your story. My first big ask was to build a low-cost pet clinic at the humane society where I was ED. I told the donor how my elderly parents loved their dogs so much but were on limited income and how the clinic would help them and other seniors whose only companions might be their pet be able to secure affordable care. I also tell my clients that no one ever cussed me out for asking them for money. The worst that can happen is you might get a "no" but most people respect the courage to ask especially on behalf of a charitable cause.

It's all about the relationships. Asking for larger donations shouldn't be about confidence. And it shouldn't be an ask out of the blue. The discussion about increasing donation amounts should be a natural progression between a fundraiser and a donor who are actively discussing and planning for ways to support their shared mission together.

When soliciting large donations, having some extra backup is always a good idea. Consider inviting some experienced fundraisers to join you in meetings with potential donors, particularly when soliciting more significant contributions. The presence of these seasoned professionals can lend additional credibility and expertise to the occasion, which can help to bolster your confidence and enhance your overall credibility in the eyes of the donors. By collaborating with these experts, you'll also be able to tap into their established relationships and connections, which can help you maximize your fundraising opportunities and achieve even greater success.

It would be helpful to be upfront about how,when and who the larger fund raisings are going to use for. A few well-known and credible women and men would be approached to share their impressions and rationales about these worthwhile projects. I have seen huge contributions raised from people who have touched by what they believe their money will and can make a difference in those lives. Their legacy is to give to the people that would carry their hope and dream for betterment of generations to come.

Understanding your programs thoroughly and, above all, valuing them is crucial for feeling confident when raising funds. Keep in mind who your donor is and whether they align with your expectations and organizational values. This connection is what motivates donations. Determine whether the donor is genuinely interested in creating real social impact or merely enhancing their self-image. This understanding is essential in deciding which approach to take. Lastly, explore other projects supported by the donor and assess whether the budget of your project aligns with their expectations. This will guide you and provide greater confidence when requesting appropriate funding.

In addition to knowing and believing deeply in the cause of your organization, it is essential to know the values of the person and/or company donating. And if you want to establish a long-term relationship, you must know their strategic business plan and corporate responsibility. Your organization's project must be aligned with or satisfy at some point the objectives of the strategic plan. Otherwise, it will be very difficult to achieve a lasting relationship. Knowing well what the other needs and being able to offer it gives you a lot of security in the relationship.
