What do you do if you lack assertiveness and confidence in leadership roles?

First consider to what extent necessary conditions are in place. Is the mission clear to you and the people you are leading? Does your role have the mandate needed and is the mandate recognized? Do the roles you lead have the mandates they need? Are there functional processes for collaboration in place? Have you and the team agreed on norms (examples: we show up on time, we come prepared to meetings, we display curiosity and encouragement in discussions). If you have set in place necessary conditions and still feel insecurity, my guess is you haven't been given the leadership training you need. Ask for such training or a leadership coach. I can tell you this much: Your potential is greater than what your lack of confidence is telling you.

This is primarily due to negative imaginings or self-created fantasies working against them. It's essential to question why these frightening mental scenarios are being constructed about one's life and replace them with imaginations aligned with desired outcomes. Thus, overcoming fears is achievable.

Définir un objectif clair, réaliste et atteignable est également très important. En complément de cette objectif et pour ajouter de la motivation, je trouve intéressant d'ajouter une vision. C'est le cap à long terme, notre moteur. Nous le voyons quand nous conduisons, dans certains sports comme le yoga, la moto, l'équitation. Nous allons là où se porte notre regard. Donc la vision est importante. D'ailleurs beaucoup de leaders ont été également qualifiés de visionnaires grace à cette capacité à avoir un objectif, une vision et à rester focus sur celles-ci.

Develop and practice assertiveness and leadership skills regularly. These could include effective communication, decision-making, conflict resolution, and delegation. Look for opportunities to take on leadership responsibilities, both within your current role and through extracurricular activities or volunteer opportunities.

Figure out what being confident and assertive means to you. Is it about speaking up in meetings, being good with words, leading discussions, or making firm decisions? Once you know, give yourself tasks that help you become that kind of person. Practice those skills regularly to build your confidence and assertiveness in different situations.

Practise your listening skills. You can paraphrase, for example "what I hear you say is that we need to revise the agenda for our weekly meeting, is that correct?" You can further demonstrate listening by building on what the other person said, for example "I see your point, team members have told me they feel our discussions lack focus." You can ask open question such as "what changes regarding the agenda would you like to see?" This is equally applicable when you don't agree. Instead of objecting "I don't think your suggestion will work since..." you can ask "how do you feel we should manage [insert the problem here]?" Maybe the other person realizes their suggestion isn't workable. Or maybe... you realize your objection was premature.

Being assertive can be part of your self confidence. We need to strike a balance in being assertive and mindful of others. Following up with reasons backing your decision will be helpful in letting know of your full perspective.

I would suggest to hire a career coach to 1- identify the reasons of lack of self-confidence and assertiveness, and then practice play-roles with the coach. Take on board the feedback of the coach and practice until the self-confidence builds up to a satisfactory level. I would also encourage areas in private life where the person can practice their leadership skills.

When you lack confidence in leadership role, you may need to revisit your purpose. Understanding why you decided to lead and guide others/why you were selected to lead comes with a purpose. To regain your confidence, you may need to redefine your purpose, engage in meaningful & strategic methods of achieving goals and craft out activities to help your team become better at their personal and professional lives. Getting your confidence could also mean the amout of quality lives you need to create; there is peace & contentment knowing that others can bring in their best to achieving excellence in the organization they align with because of the exceptional mentorship & guidance they directly or indirectly got from you (the leader).

Not being afraid to ask for feedback can encourage others to correct any misperceptions you may have and help them realize that you are expressing an opinion, feeling, or desire rather than a demand. “Am I clear? How do you see this situation? What do you want to do ?” Asking for feedback will also encourage others to be clear, direct, and specific in their comments.

These should not be grouped together. Assertiveness is overrated and should not be a goal. Confidence and Conviction- those are key. Confidence requires self belief and that comes over time. A good way to build it is by focusing on small steps, small actions. Get some small wins under your belt. Also, get a mentor to help with some guidance where needed. Conviction - belief in what you are doing, that what your are doing is important, adds value, makes things better. The persistence when everything seems against you. With confidence and conviction you don’t need assertiveness. People will follow you.

Assertiveness, yet another word used and abused without always having a clear understanding of its meaning. Properly expressed, assertiveness is an antidote to fear, shyness, passivity and even anger. Here a few typical behaviors of people avoiding asserting themselves, fearing being perceived as aggressive… ? Apologize for your own behavior and be self-critical. ? Not defending your own rights, or defending them half-heartedly so that others can ignore them. ? Not being honest about what you want or feel.

Analysing the action taken It is also important to be updated and must assess the step we have taken as a solution. If it is not much effective we must re do and find an effective way. Being updated means you are building confidence and will grow side by side of industry which you are involved.
