Mentors at best can offer their own experiences, they can't provide assurances. Mentors have walked a path that worked for them, it doesn't mean they their approach and methods will work for others. In certain instances, mentors can only offer what's already in the market and fail to bring innovation to the conversation. By the same argument, only a fool won't listen to others. Listening doesn't demand implementation or provide licence to interfere, it just broadens available possibilities to consider. In some instances a mentor can cause a line of thinking that starts the process to a string of actions and events that provides the solutions sought, in other instances the entire conversation should be relegated to the bin.

Investors can share great insights and connections that can help you with execution. But when it comes to the on ground execution you will have to take charge 100% and drive it forward. Moreover you will have to figure out over time what advice to take (or ignore) coming from an investor.
