If someone gives you feedback that points out areas where you can get better at your job, it's important to first say thank you for the feedback. If you're the one receiving the feedback, the most important thing is to let go of your ego, accept it with humility and seek ways to improve, and listen attentively.

The ability to receive feedback is a key skill for leaders. If you are not able to receive it then others will not be willing to hear it from you. Can you see feedback as a gift? Or view it as a data point you can evaluate and potentially use to improve yourself? If you can shift your view of feedback and resist the human urge to take it personally you will position yourself to grow and develop relationships that are based on mutual growth and candor.

Feedback can be really difficult to navigate. It is so important to not take feedback personally - and that is easier said than done! I try to focus on the words and not on the feelings I have as a result of the feedback. It can help when doing this to talk the feedback through with a trusted mentor or colleague. Then I like to break the feedback down to the What/How etc so that I can then begin to construct goals that will help me to achieve this. Never be afraid to ask the person who gave you the feedback to expand or talk through it further with you, this can really help you seek clarity and hone in on exactly what your opportunities are!
