So what if some senior executives preach to just do the work and do your best. If EQ becomes minimized and IQ maximized, the "just get it done", sentiment is highlighted- the organization struggles. Collaboration, idea generation, cross department perspectives are the vitamins to workplace satisfaction and workplace engagement. Do we care about how people feel while they work? Well that is up to you.... but EQ and IQ are required for future success and long term engagement.

You are the secret ingredient. I mean, to be honest, in the right context all of us are ‘that’ secret ingredient. However, someone who excels in hitting deadlines is the secret ingredient for any team or project that is in the ‘must-not-fail’ category. As a result, avoid opportunities that are low stakes. You should look for teams and projects that must succeed. Inject yourself there and people will take notice. As a coach I am always advising leaders to look out for people like you! That’s because just adding you to a team or project can turn the whole thing around and/or guarantee success.

To grow and develop further, consider expanding into more strategic activities. You should consider getting some coursework in strategic planning, but the best way is to ask for stretch projects in strategy. Those projects usually occur at the beginning of a major project. You can advocate that your success in delivering results will help early stage strategic planning. But possessing the strategic background will enhance your deadline delivery prowess. This is a common growth area for my clients. Adding strategy to your skill set will pay great dividends down the road.

Should you want to grow in your career, you can use your experience as proof and find a new environment with similar variables to test your strengths. When your strengths are tested and proven, you are not easily prey to the imposter syndrome and the inner doubter that says you can't do it. To believe in yourself, you must measure what matters. Numbers tell a concrete story that your emotional intelligence cannot override. Not all metrics are KPIs, but all KPIs are metrics and tell you in real-time what is working and why your new challenge is not working. If you want to expand your opportunities for advancement, becoming agile in your approach to new challenges is critical. You can learn how to enjoy input and feedback.

To seek greater challenges and advance your career, consider managing more complex projects with larger teams and collaborations. Look for opportunities to lead projects involving stakeholders from various departments, clients, and vendors. Engage in projects that demand strategic planning, effective communication, and cross-functional coordination, allowing you to demonstrate your ability to handle diverse and challenging environments. If you are in an MNC, seek global opportunities.

Push yourself, but balance a realistic expectation of successful delivery in choosing where to flex. In this instance, an iterative approach works best. For instance, take on one task to lead, take on one analysis to lead, or one aspect, then keep building on that.

One of the best ways to deepen your learning is by teaching what you know to others. People often get promoted for what they are good at, but can sometimes find themselves above their heads when put into a leadership position. Mentoring someone is a way to flex and develop your leadership skills. It's also a way to "pay it forward" to all those before you who may have contributed to your success. You never know - the person you help now may one day be someone you report to, or opens the door for you in other opportunities. Mentoring someone and developing these relationships is a win/win.

This action alone initiates curiosity about the roles that align with YOU. The more you learn about YOU and your capabilities, the less you are driven by the money and more by the purpose or the WHY. When you reach your WHY, you’ll have reached your crossroads. The money can undoubtedly drive you, but discovering your WHY will sustain you. Which will you choose?

I think the first thing to do is to define "career growth". Career growth means different things to different people. Do you know what you are looking for? Have you been working in the direction of your goals and aspirations? Or is your ladder leaning against the wrong wall? Next, identify your own strengths and opportunities. Do you know them? Being able to manage deadlines is a good thing. That is your strength. Find out what else? Dive deeper. Next, identify the key stakeholders - people who will matter and can help you on your journey. Why will they? Give them a reason. Work on your presence and the next level skills needed for your goals. If needed, hire a coach :)

If you are good at managing complex projects to completion you will, over time be asked to take over failing projects. If this happens, be happy as you are being recognised for your ability. Take the following steps initially to ensure success. 1. Clarify the revised outcomes or deliverables. You need to be extremely specific about timescales, resources and how the out ones will be assessed as complete. 2. Seek the views of those directly involved as to the current and future situation and proposed solution. Do this yourself using techniques that enable people to express views openly. 3. Evaluate the people involved to see who can help. These people have I have often made incredible contributions that have made the difference.

Trust your intention. While you can be strategic about what type of challenging assignments you want to take on, you may also pick something that is purely fun, or where your sixth sense invites you. Enjoy playing around with experimenting.
