What do you do if you encounter a variety of roles in computer repair companies?

Early in my tech support career, a customer brought in a computer that wouldn't turn on at all. I checked the usual suspects (power cable, power supply), but everything seemed fine. Frustrated, I was about to escalate to a hardware specialist. On a whim, I decided to open the case and noticed a tiny cable near the motherboard had become loose. Reconnecting it instantly solved the problem! This taught me the importance of thoroughness, even with seemingly simple issues.

The ability to explain hardware or software defects clearly to people with little or no computer literacy is one of the biggest differentiators that a help desk can have. Talking to customers with different experiences and being able to adapt the speech to solve their doubts makes a technician stand out even if he does not have a high experience or knowledge of senior levels. Technical support is a lot of the professional's communication skills. On several occasions during my journey, it was necessary to use examples from other areas such as cars, football, cooking, etc. This change in speech was the differential for my client to be able to understand what was really happening and why it was necessary to make the that repair.

It’s common to encounter software issues outside your usual responsibilities. You may need to contact the software’s tech support and test various installation methods to identify whether the issue is due to software settings or deployment, rather than the PC itself. In the break/fix world, if the PC boots to Windows, the internet works, and everything appears functional, you’ve technically completed your task. Taking on these tickets and documenting the issues in a knowledge base (KB) can help you stand out by demonstrating your initiative and problem-solving skills.

Familiarize yourself with any specific network settings used by the department, such as proxy configurations or static TCP settings with manual DNS and gateways. Compare with Nearby Computers: Check the network settings on computers in the same department. Use these settings as a reference to diagnose the issue but avoid duplicating IP addresses. Verify that the device is on the domain. Ensure the device does not have the same name as another device, as this can cause disconnects and other issues. Depending on the organization, they may have already resolved similar issues. Use their experience as a guide for troubleshooting. Use your domain admin rights to assist in troubleshooting and resolving network issues.

Data recovery is often automated through cloud storage and network shares. Software is typically configured before deployment to ensure backups are in place. Despite automation, mistakes happen. Users will be very upset. Have confidence in the program. Backups are created even if they are not automatically recovered. Look for specific file types, such as PowerPoint images used, or other files used in the creation of the lost data. You might be surprised at where you can recover lost data. Successfully recovering data can be very rewarding and can significantly help the user. Data Center technicians may not assist with recovery, so the responsibility often falls on you. If you care enough, you should make the effort to recover the data

This can feel unfair, and the experience gained might seem underutilized. Despite the challenges, the experience you gain during these times is invaluable and will serve you well throughout your career.
