What do you do if educational technology becomes a hindrance to effective teaching?

Keeping education at the forefront and backed by technology should be a strategy for using technology in education. Keep learning outcomes on priority, identify gaps and evaluate if the tech that you have is supporting to bridge the gap.

If educational technology hinders effective teaching, it's likely due to insufficient upfront analysis and design. Step back and reassess the learning experience design, pinpointing which technological aspects are serving their purpose and which aren't. This analysis should focus on the learning objectives and the learner's developmental expectations. My key advice is: if a technology doesn't facilitate the achievement of the desired learning outcomes, it should be discarded and redesigned. Often, you might find that multiple components are unnecessary. Prioritize aligning technology with pedagogical goals to ensure it enhances, rather than obstructs, effective teaching.

If students are equipped to solve or address the instrumental challenge posed by the tool, and we as teachers are also prepared, and we have already assessed whether the selected technology aligns with pedagogical objectives, it is important to be able to obtain feedback on what is happening. To achieve this, we can implement a feedback session in both in-person and virtual classes, use an interactive board for asynchronous feedback, or request participation in a brief questionnaire that allows us to systematize the key points of the problem.

Gathering feedback is a great way to reconnect with students. It's an opportunity to show them that their experience and opinions matter to you. Using a conversational approach to gather feedback can be enlightening to both parties. The teacher has another chance to reinforce the objectives and goals the technology is supposed to address and the students have the opportunity to voice whether or not they feel those goals are being achieved effectively.

One thing that I have found helpful is to identify the proper utilisation of education tools. It can be quite effective to achieve our learning outcomes. Use of too many tools may distract the learning process.

When educational technology becomes a barrier rather than a bridge, it's wise to reassess and streamline the tools you're using. A more minimalist approach could involve adopting a single, versatile platform that integrates multiple functions. This not only reduces the chance of technical issues but also makes it easier for both educators and students to focus on the core educational content. Simplification helps in creating a more focused, distraction-free environment conducive to learning.

Providing comprehensive training and ongoing support can empower teachers to leverage the technology effectively. Workshops, online courses, and peer mentoring programs can be utilized to enhance teachers' digital literacy and pedagogical skills.

Take a critical look at the specific EdTech tool causing issues. Can you temporarily remove it and achieve the same goals differently? Can it be used more sparingly or in a modified way?

In my experience, there are few tools powerful for their simplicity and effectiveness that are worth incorporating into classes, regardless of the discipline. Except for careers or proposals that include the handling of specific software, the most important thing is to identify a set of technologies with interfaces and utilities that truly address and satisfy clear needs. Always mindful of having updated versions, it is best to acquire a toolbox of tools that have genuine utility (communicating, presenting, demonstrating, creating, sharing) and that meet the following characteristics: free, easy to use, similar to technologies integrated into daily life, accessible.

I find that often technology overwhelm can be an issue both from a pedagogical and a classroom management standpoint. 1:1 coaching cycles with a tech coach, regular PD and access to more tech savvy or experienced colleagues to support are great ways to change and learn better ways to integrate tech meaningfully. Having a transparent digital strategy and expectations also help teachers know what they should be aiming for. A robust IT support system is also always beneficial for device support.

Do not let technology replace learning specialists, but hire them to choose, implement and govern the technology. "Teachers" can learn how to use modern technology, but cannot be replaced by it. It takes many years of study + the right aptitude + many years of practical experience to become o "teacher" (aka trainer, educator, instructional designer, etc.). The big mistake is to think that some training + technology can change anyone in the organization into a real trainer/developer.

Staying active in communities of colleagues is essential for connecting our challenges with solutions we hadn't imagined. For this, training sessions, courses, platforms like LinkedIn, along with continuous updating, are fundamental spaces for listening, reading, and sharing not only difficulties but also successful experiences from which we can learn and incorporate strategies into our pedagogical repertoires.

Think in and out of the box to make learning engaging. Before technology, there were other ways to learn. Creating more teaching aids and using another 21st-century teaching method to promote learning.

Flexibility is a fundamental condition in the practice of teaching. Being open to rethink, modify, and incorporate both technologies and the proposals themselves is the appropriate strategy for successfully developing any educational project. In the context of educational technology, it becomes even more indispensable because technology must be subordinated to the pedagogical proposal and not the other way around.

If EdTech is a hindrance, then adjusting your strategy is the right way to go. I can envision a tool being too complex for younger students. In this case, I would look for an alternate tool or consider using the tool on larger projects where the time to learn to use the tool can be more easily absorbed. The tool needs to be aligned with the learning activities and not become a distraction. For example, let's say you introduce a spreadsheet-type tool to students. This type of tool thrives when students are changing numbers for different scenarios. This type of tool is best in a project-based learning mode where students work in pairs.

When tech becomes a barrier, it's time to find alternatives. Start by clearly outlining the problems with the current technology, along with your core learning objectives and student needs. Seek out other tools, platforms, or even less tech-reliant approaches that could better achieve the learning goals. If possible, pilot test potential replacements, seeking feedback from students and teachers on which alternatives seem most effective. When implementing a new tool, provide clear instructions and have technical support in place. Remember, finding the right fit might take time.

Technology should be a help not a hindrance. Not all training should be converted to online (often technical) solutions without a proper business case, let alone for the sake of technology. AI for example is now used everywhere, just because others are using it. Bad strategy, I would say. Not everything that looks old fashioned is bad.

Depending on the subject being taught, there will be different technological tools, which can be used to “ enhance” learning. In my work I chose to identify those tools which “ expanded student experience.” Technology in itself is not a solution, it is a “ learning support or enhancement”. I chose to apply technological features and tools which directly “ added a dimension”, to the subject in hand. To do that, I designed projects where technology played a direct role within a project structure. So the tools were used as “ part of a learning experience”, not stand alone. This way, technology can then be “ integral” to learning and teaching, but does not replace face to face engagement with pupils.

Is the technology overly complex or unreliable? Does it distract students or limit interaction? Is it poorly aligned with your lesson plan or learning objectives? Talk to students and colleagues. How is the EdTech impacting their learning experiences?

En matière d enseignement ou de formation, c est le facteur humain qui est déterminant avec tous les aspects symboliques, de rapports de forces, de pouvoir. Un bon outil n est pas forcément le plus performant techniquement mais celui qui confère aux utilisateurs des marges de man?uvre, une autonomie, une reconnaissance métier.

Les outils numériques sont devenus générés par l'intelligence artificielle et c'est à mon avis un point positif qui peut aider à une prise de décision soit pour le choix lui-même de l'outil utilisé soit pour la fa?on de l'utiliser
