Something I've found very useful in involving and educating the team is to begin by mapping the data flow from the data subject perspective. This allows those involved to "witness" all important aspects of collection, purpose, storage and disposal across the lifetime of the data subject interaction with the organization. From this data flow, identifying risks and attenuation becomes a lot easier - and we can proceed with a DPIA.

I'm not a lawyer but I have read the GDPR - and I was intimidated by those who could recite the specific sections, subsections, clauses, paragraphs... Only to find that too often, those with a very strong legal knowledge don't understand the technology or are not grounded in the reality of the business. On the other end, I have met people with great technical prowess and lots of business experience who were not interested or didn't care enough about the law... As an example: using AI to identify customer patterns WITHOUT disclosing specific individual activities demonstrates 'ethical' analysis. Key to this practice is transparency, informing users about how their data is anonymised to secure trust; and, when errors occur, owning responsibility is critical. Adopting ethical approaches ensures technological benefits are realised responsibly, maintaining trust with users.

Using clear, non-technical language helps demystify the process and builds trust, much like a nutrition label helps consumers understand what's in their food.

If we accept that analysis is about finding insight in the data and providing optimal recommendations, we must also recognize the role of communication. No amount of statistical knowledge or tools wizardry will ever surpass critical judgment, problem-solving skills, creativity and an ability to synthesize complex issues into clearly articulated outcomes. Analysts serve as catalysts for change. Consequently, the most challenging facet of instigating change invariably centres on the "human" aspect.

If you have the technology and governance in place you do t need stringent data controls. Implementing a zero trust approach and leveraging latest technology to empower and use data at scale and gain the benefits of sharing data , ethically and compliantly is key. Start simple across your org from stopping sharing data with marketing agencies in csv or sftp to leveraging data clean rooms, to proper data lifecycle management are the controls your looking for.

On one side, you have the value that the analysis brings to the table; on the other, the privacy implications. Balancing these factors requires careful thought and often, creative solutions, like using synthetic data sets that maintain the statistical properties of the original data without compromising privacy.

I can't comment on "data privacy", but with regards to "data protection", this is where the mandatory requirement under the GDPR to implement "data protection by design and by default" comes to play. Once compliance and governance are assured, and appropriate anonymization and security frameworks and any other requirement is fulfilled, then it is time to educate and reassure those who are asked to provide data. Make sure that those who provide data understand that all the procedures and policies and frameworks are in place and proactively address their concerns. There is a psychological element to this. Make sure they feel valued and respected and they will be more likely to share data.
