What do you do if there are conflicting opinions on mobile technology projects?

One thing I’ve found helpful is to listen patiently with a fresh ear to each team member without interruption. Acknowledge what I’ve heard and ask if there’s anything more. Understanding first is key. As Steven Covey says ‘seek first to understand, then to be understood’! This goes far as team members do not feel judged and are able to open up more. This is where I find common ground and common strengths to build further conversation and work to reach consensus.

Start by defining the problem or decision to be made, ensuring everyone understands the context. Assess each view based on its alignment with project goals, feasibility, potential impact, and supporting data or evidence. Employ techniques such as pros and cons lists, SWOT analysis, or decision matrices to evaluate options objectively. If necessary, seek input from stakeholders or experts to gain additional insights. Ultimately, aim for a consensus that aligns with the project’s strategic objectives, while also being prepared to make a decisive call if a unanimous agreement isn't possible.

Encourage all team members to express their perspectives clearly and respectfully. Facilitate a structured discussion where each viewpoint is considered, and the pros and cons are weighed. Seek common ground or compromise by focusing on the project's goals and user needs. If necessary, involve a neutral third party, such as a project manager or mediator, to help guide the discussion and ensure a fair resolution. Ultimately, prioritizing the best interest of the project and maintaining a collaborative spirit can help navigate and resolve conflicts effectively.

An example of this is when I experience a clash of opinions, I ask permission if it’s ok to ask a question. Curiosity helps to soften the approach helping participants to be more open and willing to further conversation.

When participants co-create an action plan, I’ve often found it to be more durable and each feels respected. Teamwork and teams are strengthened and the willingness shines through. A sense of pride adds to the foundation.
