Support the investigation and reporting process, providing recommendations to prevent future incidents.

Inform the client security team about the breach. You cannot wait for assessing the impact without notifying the client first irrespective of the impact it can have on the business. Then assess the impact and identify the source of the breach. In this way the client is aware of the issue and will certainly provide necessary resources required to help contain and spread the breach

As a service provider, communication is a vital part of the value being provided to the customer. You work as an extension of the customer as a skilled, trusted advisor/provider, and the quality/effectiveness of the communication enhances the trust that is built between the parties and eases any process or turnaround needed along the activity, is on the right of the client/customer to have updated notification of their environment.

There is 1 thing in life you can control...and that is your reputation , and it starts with doing the right thing at the right times....if something because of you or something that you have found is creating or has led to the discovery of an Issue you need to be clear , concise as to the what, how and impact of it.

Sooner is always better than later. Advise them of the breach and keep them in the loop as more details and solutions are discovered. The last thing a client wants to hear is that their data was compromised, and the access point was fixed so it won't happen again. First thing they will want to know is when and why are they only hearing about it now.

Then the previously agreed plan should be invoked to assess and mitigate the impacts of the breach.

In most of the scenarios I have been asked to oversee, the breach has always come from the least expected source. The root cause has always been a rookie mistake that should never have been allowed but somehow slipped through the 'eyes' of the lead developer.

The first step as a service provider if there is a data breach is to report to the internal data protection team within the company we work for. That way, the intensity and impact of the breach is firstly identified and how that could be communicated to the client is also discussed to have an efficient relationship maintained even after the uncalled incident.

On going training or reminder content regarding how to mitigate the risk of a breach should be standard practice. A process in place for team members to report a possible breach should also be implemented (if not already) and presented to the team quarterly. Top of mind is the best defense.
