What do you do if you can't decide which audio interface is right for your recording studio?

I was searching for an interface to record drum tracks, and while there are hundreds of reviews and opinions to be found online, I just didn't have the brain space to read them and try to distill out some useful information for my application. So, I went to a trusted source to get their thoughts, and this is not meant to sound like a commercial---that source was my salesman at Sweetwater. They were patient with my extreme lack of experience and offered up some great advice and pointers, and they had me recording in no time. Everyone gathers input differently, if you prefer speaking rather than reading, my suggestion on any technology is to discuss your application with the people that use it/sell it every day.

In my experience, selecting an audio interface is more simple than it appears- given the myriad options on the market. It can be tempting to purchase something fancy & worthy of bragging rights - and you absolutely should if you can afford to. Otherwise, be realistic about the number of inputs you need & understand the possibility to add more mic pre’s to the interface you’re purchasing. Forums can be a great resource but I recommend going straight to the source. Call the company or a retailer with a knowledgeable sales staff such as Sweetwater for guidance. You’ll be surprised- most of the time, your eyes are bigger than the size interface you actually need.

Quality of the sound. In the end that's all that matters. If that's good then the connectivity is essential. It's also important that it looks nice seeing that you're going to be looking at it a lot.

Few things to consider : Input and Output Needs, by this means sssess the number of microphones and instruments you plan to record simultaneously and ensure the interface has enough channels. Also important to consider the Audio Quality. and this means that people need look for interfaces offering at least 24-bit depth and 44.1kHz sample rate for professional audio quality. Suggest to check if the interface is compatible with your computer's ports, like USB or Thunderbolt. Also ensure the interface works well with the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) you use. In addition I suggest to consider interfaces with built-in preamps, MIDI I/O, or other necessary features, then set a budget for it and find options that fit within it.

I'd also consider component quality and spl range. 10db more output headroom can really make a huge difference with good monitors

Reviews are a great starting point however be mindful of potential bias in reviews e.g affiliations, AI etc. Unboxing & demo videos are good for getting an idea of the build, dimensions etc. Compare various videos to get an idea of performance, bearing in mind that audio is probably post produced. Research reviews on customer service, software updates etc. I recently bought a new interface and fired off a couple of questions to the tech support email before buying. Their quick & helpful responses helped me make my decision to go ahead.

If you can try one out, do. Ask to borrow one or buy it, try it out and send it back if it's not right. What I miss is being able to try gear out in a store. If you're lucky enough to have a browse in a store, ask to try them out there.

Testing is one way go to choose the rihgt device for recording audios and lestening . First you have tead the manual and working principle of that device.

If i can’t choose, I would definitely go guitar center and get something that i watched a video about on YouTube with good reviews and try it for 28 days and then… return it, yes. Until i find what i need????

I would do an extensive research about the unit I intent to buy. Ask colleagues, look for reviews, look for Pros & Cons, compare to and with similar models, I would even call the company to ask any pertinent questions about the unit. And that’s how I will determine if it’s right for my studio or not.

Look for no. Of inputs and outputs and sampling rate and bit depth and OS compatibility and preamps to which is very important for achieving good quality sound

If you can’t choose, buy any one and use it until you realise you need something different. There’s no excuse for indecisiveness if you are running a business!

I think one of the things to do that has been mentioned here but should be brought to the forefront, is asking your colleagues who have studios. There is a wealth of insight to be found here, because each one will have used at least one interface thoroughly, and will know all the pros and cons. It makes it that much easier to get relevant answers quickly: What interface do you use? Do you like it? What don't you like about it? What are its limitations?
