What do you do if AI is taking over jobs but human skills are still essential?

Since the pandemic began, the number of asynchronous learning opportunities have exploded. You can take short courses on LinkedIn, study from a distance at some of the world’s best educational institutions, catch keynotes and panels that used to require travel, brush up on second, third, fourth languages. Since ChatGPT has exploded on the scene, followed by a number of new competitors, I’ve been building upon my understanding of AI and machine learning through courses while experimenting with the tools, networking with those in the field and talking with others experimenting with the technology in their industries.

Try and commit to taking at least one linkedin or other course each week on AI. Best way to get comfortable is to learn using the new technologies. See if you can use it to automate repetitive tasks and free up time to take on new challenges.

I have been observing that it is necessary to stay up to date, accelerate my knowledge to remain relevant, especially when new developments appear in the world of AI.

To upskill effectively, adopt a culture of continuous learning. Set clear personal and professional growth goals. Leverage online courses, workshops, and webinars to stay current with industry trends and technologies. Encourage cross-functional projects to gain diverse skills and perspectives. I don't know if collaborating with AI is the best description, but I learned that it is necessary to continue learning or at least be informed of each advance, of which there are many.

AI, intended as ChatGPT-like technology, will continue to lack real understanding and, therefore, make mistakes that may differ from those made by humans but still need human verification. Then, I would not say that "AI is taking over jobs" completely, especially in certain areas. A double check by humans, and so certain human skills, will still be essential, at least on certain high-quality or high-risk jobs. Finally, the European AI Act and other laws may simply make it illegal to replace humans with AI for several jobs, whether or not this would work technically.

The target users are human. Human users will need a human touch. AI can make the whole process efficient but certain human skills will always be in demand.

Shifting focus is the key here. I work in the legal field, and while there is a LOT that AI can automate to help us work smarter and faster, AI cannot yet replicate human judgment. There are nuances that, so far, legal professionals regularly catch and address that AI will miss because while it can ingest a massive amount of information, it may not make the connections or find the creative solutions that a human can. For example, contract negotiations. If my playbook says the options are A, B, and C, and the counterparty’s playbook options are D, E, and F, AI may struggle to come up with a solution that both parties may agree to. The savvy negotiator knows the human element, and can usually find a path forward outside of the given options.

AI has been making strides in areas traditionally associated with human creativity. For instance, AI has been used to create art, compose music, and even write poetry. However, these creations are based on patterns learned from existing data and lack the originality and emotional depth that human creativity brings. AI can mimic creativity, but the human touch is truly unique.

In the new AI era, where AI can automate anything humans do repetitively, human creativity will be very much in demand. Creativity never goes out of fashion. After all, it was human creativity and innovation that created Gen AI. But creative people will always be in demand in the future because that is what makes us uniquely human. A significant population of human beings have lost their creative edge as they have outsourced most of their day-to-day to machines. But if we re-create our creativity, that will give us an edge in the new world. Good luck!

I believe a first important step is to share our thoughts and learn more. And I realise that i must spend time and focus on learning much more about both the opportunities and the threats. And we must train and prepare for a near future we know little about.
