Early in my career, a developer made the mistake of forgetting the WHERE clause when running a DELETE statement against our largest and most important table. Luckily, the table was large enough that this SQL statement would take upwards of an hour or more to actually complete. Our solution: Kill the process, which automatically rolls back the transaction. Of course, the key is not to get into this situation in the first place. Here are a few things to try: 1) Don't work in the live environment. The best environment has at a minimum a dev, qa, stage and prod. 2) Don't DELETE data from the database. Instead, include a delete_timestamp that is null for live data and not null for deleted data.

If critical data is not backed up, you are not managing data well. Years ago, a system we set up included a transaction log. IF we lost the system, we could rerun the day from "start of day". Upgrades should happen after backups. If necessary run parallel backups if you cannot trust one copy.
