What are the differences between system programming and application programming?

System programming focuses on developing software that interacts closely with the hardware and operating system to manage system resources and provide a foundation for other software. It deals with tasks like device drivers and kernel development. Application programming, on the other hand, involves creating software applications for end-users to perform specific tasks or functions, often using higher-level programming languages. System programming is more low-level and requires a deep understanding of the system, while application programming is higher-level and user-oriented. System programming is critical for system stability and performance, while application programming delivers functionality directly to users.

I’ve always boiled it down to that systems programming allows computers to communicate with each other where application programming allows humans and computers to interact and communicate. (Way over simplified in under 200 words ??)

System programming needs deep understanding of system kernel and OS resource management and its optimal usage. System programming is heart of Embedded systems. It facilitates other applications to avail OS resources but not necessary. "C" is a good system level programming language. Application programming are mostly done with high level language and programmers does not need to know much of OS resources and usage, like memory garbage collection etc, threads/processes synchronization, concurrency, parallelism, driver/HW usages etc..

System programming allows the application to run through it and interact with hardware. Can say that system programming enables the path to use hardware services.

Both are quite different, from tooling to the way of programming. Understanding the differences from the foundations to the architecture minutes is crucial to optimal programming. In system programming, you should be focused on the hardware functionality, taking decisions considering all the devices involved in the hardware, timings and other hardware technical details. In contrast, the application programming is focused on functionality from the user perspective and suboptimal coding is still functional (not recommended, though). When I am always explaining from both perspectives, I always recommend also considering what's under the hood so you can get the most while programming.

One challenge that is often understated in application development is time to market. Especially in the context of startups, time to market is one of the most important factors. Applications have to be designed, developed and tested as fast as possible and having some minor issues in the product is acceptable. In contrast systems undergo thorough design, development and test and time is not of much concern. Instead it is important to mitigate risks and solve issues before releasing the product.

Bugs coming from System Programming might show at Application Programming projects and even might persist and be a problem for all applications. Bugs at Application Programming are isolated inside of the application.

Summary System programming is just as the title implies, programming that involves components of the operating systems. Application programming involves development and maintenance of components of applications that provide the functionality for the end user.

Actually they're not as different as it might seem, the biggest difference might be whether one is more often associated with commandline interface and the other closer to the graphical user interface, also one requiring more performance optimization and execution speed since is the base on top of which everything else runs, starting from the kernel which has modules that eg. will communicate with drivers allowing to connect and control the hardware and of course the rest of the operating system built on top of the kernel. Usually low level programming languages are used for this, eg. C, Zig or Rust whereas most end user applications are built using other higher level languages like C#, Java, Javascript, python, Go, php and so on.

When we speak of system programming, one should make the difference which kind of hardware will be used, von Neumann architecture or self-defined using FPGAs. Furthermore, the application programmed inside is actually equal to system programming, IF we implement the algorithm directly in FPGA, meaning without a traditional processor or MCU. Why would one choose FPGA over CPU? Well, in the age of AI: a. the memory bottleneck is a serious problem b. let alone the use of neural networks as a basis leaving the common program as a sequence of instructions far behind. c. the execution speed is at least one or two an orders of magnitude higher than conventional approaches.
