Stephen Few defines a dashboard as “a visual display of the most important information needed to achieve one or more objectives; consolidated and arranged on a single screen so the information can be monitored at a glance”. Single Screen! Therefore, creating a dashboard is also an activity of the main information summary. And if you don`t want to entail analysis paralysis (an inability to decide due to information excess), you have to use white spaces smartly.

Standardize your headers by modifying the design so it auto formats all headers similar to the text or content modify on style and choose a standardized style, spacing and format formatted headers and o texts makes it easy to insert a table of content and to the reader to easily navigate to.a specific page through the table of content. Insert page numbers for ease of reference.

I couldn’t agree more, color is so powerful. Include more charts, illustrative, pictures , flowcharts and diagrams. Sometimes readers do not have time to read but a colorful picture or chart with the correct information may attract a reader. Have colors with useful information so that the readers may be intrigued and read the report. A report with a lot of useful color diagrams,pictures, flow charts and charts maybe more useful then a report with useful information but a-lot of texts. People don’t like to look for information, they want it easily accessible.

In my experience I have found that the higher up the hierarchy you are, the less likely you are to read the whole report. When I prepare a multi-page report for a Minister or executive, the front page is full of highlights and graphics, because that's the page they'll read. The rest of the report is for their staff.

The main aim of a visual narrative is to communicate. And every communication theory reminds us that communication is something established between the sender and the receptor. Therefore, two great points to add here are: (1) Define your audience; (2) Test and refine your dashboards and visual narratives with someone who represents very well your audience.
