In my experience, I've found multiple considerations that cater to scalability effectiveness. But again these are highly domain-driven, especially if you want to avoid the peril of "Over-Engineering" or "Analysis-Paralysis" cycles. Systems (Physical or Virtual) should reflect the natural order/ecosystem in which they are placed. The design should take this into critical consideration as part of systems modelling. This would reveal the bounded contexts in which system components would exist, act and interact. They also naturally reveal the constraints in the problem domain and help take due consideration for de-couplement giving room for non-blocking interactions with high concurrency.

In my experience to get the Architecture right, one needs to get the requirements right. System Usecases, scenarios, interactions (blocking vs non-blocking), Type of Workloads(Read Heavy vs Write Heavy) and last but not least Volumetrics (Average, peak) and Latency. Having the right inputs helps in making the right design choices and tradeoffs. Then adopt the right design patterns for the requirements - Right sized services, Async for blocking scenarios, Caching, Database sharding, partitioning, replication, NOSQL for read intensive loads and finally Horizontal scaling.

Part of the optimization process is a structural process that begins with the ideas established in the design. The value of this documentation (aside from making it easier to onboard new team members) is to periodically take a step back from the delivery and look at how the parts interact.
