Here are some decision-making tools that I personally use in building our team culture : Transparent communication is number one tool that I use in order to build accountable and responsible team. Clearly communicating expectations, sharing information, and addressing any concerns promptly. Not letting your team members fail is the key motive to communicate clearly and timely, advising and unselfishly shearing your knowledge.

For instance once I secure a project and decide which supervisor I am going to use I bring him in a give him the job scope to review then the following day we all meet. At that time I want to see how he plans to do the project without him knowing how I or one of my PM’s estimated it. Another perspective always opens eyes, we usually then combine all input into a work plan and manage the project through the work plan from start to finish.

I deal with aircraft landing gear (LG) sustainment engineering. Ideally, I would take every LG designer forward in time a few decades and have them work my job manufacturing spares, repairing and investigating failures on their design for 5-8 years and return to the conceptual design phase. Then I would repeat a few times. Since we can't time travel the next best thing is to take people like me and involve us in the design process. I was a part of an attempt to do this on a new aircraft design. However, since the contract didn't give any priority or authority to sustainment decisions the program got an "A" for effort but a "D" in practice. Feedback has to be built-in prioritized and funded in the initial requirement.

We are seeing a cultural shift around feedback and accountability. I believe adopting a more communal process to feedback allows for those with critical feedback to have confidence and compassion to be able to speak to someone when it is in a safe group. In essence, this is taking a 360-Review and make it a living and breathing session. I believe a communal process to feedback and development is the way to go.
