What are the current trends and challenges in innovation learning and education?

O maior desafio sempre é conhecer a fundo os usuários. Vivemos este grande aprendizado durante a Pandemia, quando ajudamos milhares de alunos e educadores a retomar as atividades nas Escolas Públicas brasileiras através do uso de Tecnologias de Informa??o e Comunica??o (Tics). Quando as escolas foram fechadas devido ao isolamento social, nos deparamos com desafio imenso que era a defasagem de forma??o dos educadores. Percebemos muito rapidamente que, naquele contexto emergencial, está também era uma dor muito forte. A partir desta perspectivas, iniciamos um trabalho estratégico de Forma??o Continuada para os Professores da Educa??o Básica, alinhado à BNCC e à BNC-FC.

Na minha experiência os maiores desafios seriam os seguintes: - Acelerar o "time to market" de lan?amentos inovadores - Conciliar o trabalho em andamento com iniciativas inovadoras de médio e longo prazo (ambidestria) - Desenvolver uma cultura orientada à inova??o para Integrar e coordenar frentes inovadoras. - Desenvolver um olhar mais amplo e provocativo, para além do negócio (cross industry) Acredito que estes desafios s?o comuns em diferentes setores/ indústrias pelas agendas que tenho com diferentes clientes que me trazem essas dores.

Hybrid models can be effective when companies use collaborative tools like Miro when they are online and have incentives for everyone to come into the office (i.e. twice a week). The incentives could be events, food, or any type of team bonding. It’s a good idea to balance the interactions in an online setting and hybrid.

Na minha experiência, uma boa prática é incorporar aprendizagem ativa e gamifica??o em modelos online e híbridos. Isso ajuda a manter o engajamento e a colabora??o entre alunos e educadores. Além disso, utilizar ferramentas digitais que facilitem a intera??o e a cocria??o pode superar os desafios de comunica??o e feedback nesses ambientes.

To my experience, online and hybrid models are excellent approaches to include people from different locations, timezones and cultures across the globe. Using collaboration platforms is essential to share and work on shared material. There are promising new tools like Waypoint beyond the classic Mural or Miro or Microsoft Whiteboard. The challenge with the latter is how to extract relevant information which is well documented, and how to spot where (with whom) the actual knowledge and expertise sits. So, creating interactions about relevant questions with a network and community are paramount to keep engagement, peer learning and project-based learning going.

Innovation learning doesn't stop at graduation. Real skills develop in the field, through projects, failures, and rebounds. Formal education has its place, but it's the continuous, informal learning that keeps innovators sharp. The challenge? Recognizing and validating these diverse experiences. We need systems that acknowledge skills gained outside classrooms. Not for vanity, but to identify true innovators. Effective learning frameworks should emphasize doing over theorizing. Build, reflect, improve, repeat. It's messy, but it works. The best innovators are curious generalists. They learn from everything - work, hobbies, communities. They're always experimenting, always adapting. In innovation, the market is the ultimate teacher.

I do believe we are all students, and learning isn't just a word. A growth mindset that involves learning from every experience, even the unexpected ones, is crucial for lifelong and informal learning. This type of learning naturally occurs outside the classroom through work, hobbies, collaboration, and networking. To address challenges such as quality, recognition, and motivation for learning, we need a few popular frameworks such as digital badges, ePortfolios, and incentives to document and validate our learning outcomes. This support helps us stay adaptable and innovative for the future.

Most of the current (high) school and university curricula teach repetitive knowledge but not the skills that are required for the complicated and complex challenges that we face. Critical thinking, acquiring data from different sources and checking their reliability (or "truth"), asking the right questions to understand the problem at hand, building the customer before building the product and striving for sustainability in terms of profit, people and planet are among these skills. The Purpose Launchpad agile innovation framework offers a systematic and measurable approach along these 8 dimensions: Purpose, People, Customer, Sustainability, Abundance / Scaling, Processes, Product and Metrics.

A key trend in learning and education in innovation is recognizing the importance of lifelong and informal learning. Innovation requires continuous learning and adaptation to changing needs, opportunities, and contexts. Lifelong and informal learning occurs outside formal educational settings, such as through work, hobbies, social networks, communities of practice, and online resources. It enhances learning and education in innovation by providing relevant, authentic, and diverse experiences, perspectives, and feedback. In my journey, embracing lifelong learning has been crucial for staying ahead in a rapidly evolving landscape.

"Beware of the expert - he/she will tell you what will not work". Well, I appreciate expertise very much. However, expertise can block fresh and unconventional views at problems. I have experienced quite some situations where experts were stuck with thinking about solutions for a problem, until bringing in people who were quite "unfamiliar" with the problem just asked questions that shifted views and opened paths to new solutions. Agile working methods like Scrum promote interdisciplinary teams to bring together all necessary skills and competencies required to create a solution - based on a deep understanding of the problem. Tools supporting this approach are canvasses, agile work environment and collaboration tools.

I recently met a startup called Discentis in Italy and they are warriors to me. They have developed an approach to deliver digital learning courses to teachers. This enables teachers to then transfer the knowledge to students and create a virtuous circle where all parties learn in new, innovative ways and last but not least keeps the school cutting edge in terms on innovation.

Hyperspecialization creates professionals with a fragmented view, hindering innovation. To overcome this, it is crucial to bridge the gap between the productive sector, which values practical and horizontal knowledge, and academia, which focuses on the verticalization of knowledge. This approach must be mutual. Strategic partnerships, internships, applied research programs, and hackathons can integrate academic theories with practical solutions. Additionally, academia needs to be proactive in technology transfer, stepping out of its comfort zone to lead this collaboration. This way, interdisciplinarity will be encouraged, and innovation will flourish from the combination of different perspectives and knowledge.

Innovation thrives at the intersection of disciplines. Bringing together diverse fields can spark fresh ideas, but it also requires a willingness to embrace different perspectives. Don’t shy away from breaking down silos—real innovation often happens when boundaries are blurred.

Social, environmental and ethical dimensions of innovation learning and education can be based on using 1. the Sustainable Business Model Canvas which is extended by the social-ecological costs and benefits created by businesses 2. the Ethics Canvas taking a deep look at Individuals Affected, Behavior, Relations, What Can we Do?, Worldview, Group Conflicts, Groups Affected, Product or Service Failure and Problematic Use of Resources Both are excellent and proven tools for a systematic and structured approach to tackle the ethical and socio-ecological dimensions of innovation.

Behavioural and cultural challenges are the most frequent - and yet most intractable - barriers to effective organisational innovation and prevents innovation from becoming diffused and adopted by the majority. Innovation learning and education needs to focus more on people than on creating perfect processes - we need to emphasise diversity and inclusion as core innovation skillets, as well as building collaboration as a recognised and rewarded skillset in its own right. Collaborating with lots of different people is hard and needs a lot of emotional intelligence and resilience as well as tools and communication.

Com a tecnologia que nós temos disponível hoje oferecer uma aprendizagem realmente personalizada e adaptativa é algo totalmente possível. A minha análise é que este mercado teve uma explos?o de crescimento t?o grande que há espa?o para todos que de alguma forma quiserem uma fatia do bolo. Ninguém ainda foi obrigado a oferecer algo realmente diferente. Espero que este mercado se consolide e empresas sérias comecem a ter que elevar o nível do seu jogo.

To maximize these benefits, educators must promote a culture of open communication and mutual respect. They should design programs that encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration and teach skills like remote teamwork and digital co-creation.

Pensando em aprendizagem colaborativa, a gamifica??o é uma das tendências que consigo pensar. Trata-se de uma abordagem inovadora que aplica elementos de jogos em contextos n?o lúdicos, como a educa??o, para engajar e motivar os alunos. Essa técnica tem se mostrado eficaz na promo??o da aprendizagem, trazendo benefícios notáveis. A meu ver, o design thinking( DT) é uma excelente abordagem quando fala-se de aprendizagem colaborativa. Além disso, ao unir o DT com o design de experiências de aprendizagem, a possibilidade de constru??o de algo memorável é quase 100%.

I believe one of the most significant challenges is developing a mindset and culture that allows learning to innovate. Beyond that, the details won't matter. It is the leaders' job to seek ways to create these ecosystems and work together with the team to change and break paradigms—those paradigms that limit innovation and have been ingrained in us for a long time. Creating a culture and mindset of innovation will be the big step to enabling us to learn about it.

A focus on both intellectual property (IP) and artificial intelligence (AI) education is required. Educating learners on IP rights is crucial to protect their innovations. AI education helps learners understand the development and application of AI technologies. The overlap between IP and AI is particularly important, as embedding IP education within AI courses enables learners to grasp the legal and ethical implications of AI development. This integrated approach equips individuals to manage the complexities of creating and protecting AI-driven innovations, fostering a culture of responsible and informed technological progress.

Currently my biggest challenge is to educate on using AI within innovation. Setting up structures and processes, access to the tools, education on best practice prompting. AI can be used in multiple parts of the innovation process from ideation to testing and on to product visualisation, but knowing how and where to start is key.

In my view there is just now offer covering all steps of innovation development and providing a roadmap. You need to put all pieces together like a puzzle.

I think we should focus on boosting innovation skills, such as ideation, connecting the dots, and empathy. These skills are crucial for preparing individuals to think creatively and adapt to rapidly changing challenges. Developing these capabilities is essential for fostering innovation.
