It can be quite a challenge for educational facilities to not only purchase the hardware needed due to budget restraints, but obtain enough headsets needed for their labs or classrooms. Unless there is a bundle offered packaged with software, many manufacturers have delays due to supply chain issues and bulk purchasing can be a lengthy process.

The pandemic showed us how difficult it was for schools to adapt to digital classrooms, without adding the extra layer of virtual reality. Not only there is a need for technical understanding, but educational material that is still on paper now should not only be digitalized, but also made accessible and effective in virtual reality.

High-quality VR experiences rely on powerful hardware, including headsets, computers with capable graphics cards, and often dedicated tracking systems. These can be expensive and place limitations on where and how VR is deployed in the classroom. Software poses another challenge, as educators need to locate compatible, well-designed educational VR content, which may be limited or require tailoring for specific curricula.

In the realm of VR and education, research and behavioral science experiments remain scarce. In my work with the UN in Colombia, involving 1200 students in a VR study related to the peace process, highlighted the need for more rigorous investigation into VR's impact on behavior. We found out that VR can indeed foster deeper empathy, alter meta-perceptions, and create lasting memories - but traditional methods like role plays or 2D audiovisual content is powerful too. Creating shared spaces where students can interact with each other and their teachers seamlessly within VR environments is an ongoing technological challenge. Fostering a sense of community and belonging while wearing a headset needs careful consideration by educators using this technology.

VR is great for collaboration! One technical challenge however that educators should take into account is around school IT and privacy, firewalls and ports can pose a challenge into accessing VR and certain software (especially if social or collaborative) that accesses the internet or outside networks. Definitely check with your IT departments on what limitations or restrictions you might face before taking a big expenditure into VR.

Making sure that educators and software developers also know about child privacy and student data compliances such as FERPA and COPPA is very important. Following these guidelines and making sure that these compliances are taken into planning anything related around VR education is important. Even in marketing or when sharing case studies it is good to be versed in these compliances especially at the K-12 levels.

VR raises questions around the collection and use of student data, especially with experiences tracking eye movements or biometrics. Additionally, hyper-realistic simulations raise questions about potential psychological impacts on young learners. Developing ethical guidelines and legal frameworks around VR content and usage in education will be crucial as these experiences become more widespread.

Something else to consider when looking at emerging technology applications such as augmented reality (AR) for educational purposes is the actual rate of adoption. Here are some questions to consider: ? Are these being used at scale? ? What is the cost per user, and how does that compare to alternatives? ? What barriers to entry exist other than cost?

Industry & society stands on the brink of a pivotal new era one in which advances in multiple technological areas, not only XR but also cloud, edge computing, and AI, are congregating to fundamentally change the world. Mindset, infrastructure, and business model are the most challenging area for those technologies.

Educational institutions are grappling with integrating immersive education into their budgets, leading to a shortage of high-quality content. Additionally, scaling hardware poses a challenge; top-tier headsets come at a steep price and require ongoing maintenance by trained professionals. Essentially, establishing an immersive department within each educational organization might be necessary to make this technology efficient and beneficial for students.
