What are common mistakes made in teamwork?

Lack of clearly defined roles in a team can lead to confusion, overlapping duties, and conflict, hampering efficiency and morale. To address this, establish clear job descriptions, hold role clarification sessions, and ensure regular communication about responsibilities. Leaders should receive training in defining roles and managing team dynamics. Encourage feedback on role clarity and adjust as needed. Aligning each role with team goals fosters a cohesive and productive environment.

Micromanagement under the guise of collaboration in teams is a common pitfall in teams. Yet, it's hardly talked about. Unfortunately, some leaders mistake close supervision, controlling every decision, minute by minute updates, etc, for collaboration. This usually leads to frustration, diminishes motivation, and stifles creativity in teams. It is imperative to set clear expectations and encourage autonomy while providing support and guidance without constant oversight. This approach often yields better results.

Clarity of roles and responsibilities is crucial to minimising conflict, optimising efficiency and promoting job satisfaction. As a professional coach, I encourage the use of tools such as the Eisenhower matrix for priority management, enabling a clear distinction to be made between urgent tasks and those that are truly important. In the current context, well-being at work is of paramount importance. In addition to clarifying roles, open communication is fundamental. Encourage team members to share their ideas, concerns and progress. Transparency builds trust and strengthens team commitment.

I would say, diversity and inclusion is one of the key factors for team work. If one don't feel inclusive in the place, they lack the sense of teaming. It will affect all areas of work. The way they communicate in team, the passing of responsibility, supporting each other, being empathetic, and what not! Everything depend on how much one feels part of the team and organization. Who is responsible for inclusivity in a Team? Its not manager or the organization, inclusivity is every one's responsibility. Every one in the team should make sure how they behave to each other, are they giving a sense of inclusivity to each other. Grow as a team, fail as a team and win as a team!

One of the major challenges a team faces is when there is lack of trust and accountability within. For the first time when I got promoted, I felt this within my team. What I did? I ensured an open communication channel and an open door policy. This gradually started to improve the trust and cohesion in my team leading to overall positive impact in productivity as well. Further, in the team meetings I enabled a two way feedback channel which help me grew as a leader. Then, I clarified their responsibilities as individuals in the team. This made them accountable for their work without any extra pressure and helped us achieve some exciting target which seemed almost impossible in the beginning.

Team leaders hold the key to better teamwork. Instead of hearing complaints, they should help team to sort out issues directly within the team. This builds better bonds and makes team work more effectively together. Leaders to keep close eye on bullying due to cultural conflicts, or corruption.

As per me, these days a major issue in teamwork is Favouritism. By doing this you are ensuring the team to be destroyed as it can breed resentment, diminish teams morale and erodes trust within the team. Leaders need to stop doing this and also treat everyone as equals to have a more inclusive and cohesive team environment.

Another big mistake with teamwork is scheduling many meetings but not taking clear notes and following up on those notes after the meeting. This results in the same issues or ideas being discussed at multiple meetings without any resolution. Highly ineffective.
