Event play the long term game. They are there to start or nurture relationships. Events are a good way to meet, ideally physically, a significant number of startup in a short period of time. I personally like pitch competitions, as the time constrain, especially if we talk about 3 to 5 minutes presentation, bring the essence of the startup. That being said, they do average as a source of deal. Most likely, you can extend your network amongst founders and other investors. On the sourcing of deal side however, it is more limited as you are unlikely to close a deal because of an event meeting.

Would read newspapers that cover locations that are in your target and specific to your industry. You can also speak with universities and develop partnerships with certain faculties.

All of the methods listed work. It isn't hard to source deals. There are more entrepreneurs seeking capital than there are VC firms to fund them. To be efficient in your deployment of capital venture capital firms need to clearly establish their investment thesis based on: Industry Stage Addressable market Capital required to be profitable Then they can nuance within that first level as to whether the entrepreneurs understand their marketplace well enough to be successful. Networking is the old passé way of attracting deal flow and does not produce adequate diversity. Virtual and in person in pitch competitions can be a waste of time. The best way is to not hide. Be findable and then have a very criteria and clear application process.

Fair to say that VC′s do not really have a challenge to source deals, they get loads of requests. example Kleiner Perkins get′s over 3.000 requests, tries to meet 10% of those (300 a year) and than invest in 10% of those 30 companies, sometimes less sometimes more. There is a movement though, where good VCs start sharing best practices and information about their ′secret sauce′ and metrics how they operate to support companies with knowledge. This serves a purpose to get founders better prepared and also create better matches....but 1 post with we have money to deploy is enough these days;-)
