What are the common causes and solutions of VLAN mismatch errors?

Put simply, vlan's are expressed in one of two ways. Either a switch "keeps track" of which ports are associated with which VLAN and simply refuses to let frames cross over directly from VLAN x to VLAN y, or if you need to preserve VLAN membership beyond the boundaries of a given switch, then it's expressed as a few extra bytes of information in an Ethernet frame called an VLAN tag. Devices that understand VLANs will know what to do with those extra bytes and will accept or drop frames accordingly.

Common causes of VLAN mismatch errors include 1 misconfigured trunk ports, 2 mismatched VLAN IDs, inconsistent VLAN configurations. 3 VLAN pruning issues. Solutions involve verifying trunk port configurations. 4 checking VLAN IDs, implementing VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP). 5 using VLAN Access Control Lists (VACLs), regularly 6 auditing VLAN configurations, and implementing proper change management procedures.

Another example of a VLAN mismatch can happen on what are often referred to as "trunk ports". Trunk ports are when you set a port to carry traffic from multiple VLANs between two devices, often the "other device" being another switch in your network. Let's say you have a guest wireless VLAN, and one side of the trunk is configured to pass traffic on that VLAN, but the other side isn't. This would be a configuration mismatch wherein your "guest wireless" traffic would fail due to one side of the trunk not being configured to accept that VLAN tag.

Look at your port config. The problem is either there, or in your spanning tree configuration. When interconnecting devices, it's important to make sure you're pruning vlans appropriately to prevent broadcast storms. While VTP can do this automagically, in my experience most seasoned network engineers configure interconnection ports by hand, or by some type of configured automation (terraform, ansible, etc). Because network engineers try to reduce broadcast storm, consistency is key. If you are not seeing a vlan where you expect, go back and look at your interconnections to make sure you're passing the same vlans on both sides of a connection, and that spanning tree is configured in such a way that it puts the vlan in a forwarding state.

Another common method of troubleshooting VLAN mismatch is the time honored tradition of "stare and compare". If you are taking over or supporting a network that you didn't design, sometimes just following the configuration of "VLANs that work" and comparing it to the configuration for "VLANs that don't work", you can easily see what the difference between them is and adjust accordingly.

As Dustin Sandage said, compare the configuration on both sides of the link. But also check that the vlan and tagging is correct. Like the results from "show ethernet-switching interface ..." command in Juniper. Another possibility is to check the mac address table for the interface, are there mac addresses registered there? Commands like "show ethernet-switching table interface ..." and "show mac address-table interface ..." are of great help to verify that the switch is seeing traffic on the vlan.

Look at the spanning tree state for each vlan on the port in question. It should be either learning or forwarding. If the vlan in is another state, you need to look at your stp configuration. Also look at the vlans allowed on a trunk (or the native untagged vlan) for an access port or as defined on a trunk port. If something doesn't match on both sides, things are going to break. Since VTP is Cisco only, it's important to know other ways of looking at this. If show commands on your platform do not reveal anything, it's always possible you're hitting a bug. Using wireshark (which understands vlan headers in the ethernet frame) to make sure some packet (usually an arp request) is in the vlan you expect. Consistency is key.

VLAN mismatch errors can occur when different encapsulation types, such as 802.1Q & ISL (Inter-Switch Link), are configured on either side of a trunk. I encountered this issue when integrating older Cisco switches into a network using newer 802.1Q-based infrastructure. also on multivendor environment cross connecting VLAN at the patch panel can be fun to track down. especially if switch logs are not sent to a central monitoring server and spanning tree does not auto disable the port. Strange broadcast bursts maybe seen.
