What is the circular economy and how does it relate to agribusiness?

1. Implementing Precision Agriculture Techniques: Leverage GPS-guided machinery & data analytics for precise resource optimization, minimizing fertilizer and pesticide use, thus reducing waste & environmental impact. 2. Promoting Agroecology Practices: Prioritize biodiversity, natural pest control, & organic farming, contributing to environmental health & bolstering agricultural system resilience. 3. Establishing Closed-Loop Systems: turning waste into resources. For instance, using crop residues for composting or livestock feed creates a symbiotic production cycle. 4. Investing in Sustainable Farming Practices: Support agroforestry, integrating trees into landscapes to enhance biodiversity & contribute to carbon sequestration.

Circular economy was one of my very key takeaways from the #AgribusinessAcademy. It is a 'must use' model designed to judicious and accurate use of resources. In agribusiness, it involves optimizing resource use in agriculture, minimizing waste and promitimg regerative practices. It is the bedrock of sustainability.

First, every business, organization and individual needs to become more #circular to lesson environmental impacts and improve resource efficiency. Here are 4 ways that agribusiness can become more circular: 1. Agribusinesses can conserve and regenerate natural resources such as #water, #soil and #biodiversity. 2. Agribusinesses can reduce food waste by improving supply chains, educating consumers, improving post-harvest handling, storage and transportation. Investing in food bank networks and composting! 3. Designing packaging for for circularity by using materials that can be recycled or reused. Less single use plastic! 4. Incorporate renewable energy (wind, solar, etc.) into all practices including electric equipment.

The challenges for agribusiness improving circularity comes down to #collaberation, #communication and #education of all stakeholders. From the farmer to the consumer, all must invest monetarily and/or behaviourly and openly discuss options at each point in the process. For example, food waste and spoilage are two good examples. Up to 1/3 of all food ends up in landfills. This is totally unacceptable when we have food deserts across the world and in the United States. Consumers need to be aware that what a food looks like has little to do with its nutrition or taste. Education around expiration dates for consumers is another prime target to reduce waste! Every phase of food production, distribution and sales has room for improvement.

Agribusinesses can conserve and regenerate our most precious natural resources such as #water, #soil and #biodiversity by implementing practices such as: ? Cover cropping ? Protecting waterways with riparian buffers and other proven soil and water conservation practices. ? Increasing habitat for wildlife and insects will allow biodiversity to thrive. ? Working livestock into land management that will improve soil health and nutrient cycling. ? Using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to reduce pesticide use. ? Utilizing precision agriculture to plan and execute planting strategies that reduce fertilizer and water needs for crops. These are a few of the practices that need to be universally implemented to protect our most valuable resources.

Agribusinesses can use LCA to identify areas for improvement & minimize resource consumption. 2. Supply Chain Management Software: that offer real-time visibility into the supply chain help agribusinesses track & manage their products from farm to table. This can reduce waste, improve logistics, & enhance overall sustainability. 3. Blockchain Technology: ensures transparency & traceability in the supply chain. It helps in verifying the authenticity of products, reducing fraud, & ensuring fair practices, which align with circular economy principles.

The future is now and every stakeholder involved in food production, distribution and sales must come together and agree on universal tenets of circularity. Collaberation, education and communication are the watch words of the day!
