There are not that many books written using the second person. They can be evocative and thought-provoking, however, it is also challenging to write. As an author, I try hard to let go of my feelings, beliefs, memories, etc. to let each character develop and shine as an individual. I will argue that no matter how much we try and leave ourselves, as authors, at the door, there is a creep factor. When written in second person, as noted, the reader is the character. They have the lead role. As the author you know nothing about the reader, so it is challenging to connect every potential reader.

It could not be more true that using second person is like a "tightrope walk." As I noted previously, as the writer, you have no idea who each reader is and what they bring to the book. I am not saying using second person is not interesting, all I am saying is - it is extremely challenging to write a story or novel using this approach. I think most authors don't use it because of the challenge. It is so easy to fail.

The biggest issue is that most writers are not taught to write using the second person perspective. This means they read less using this approach, which then results in less experimentation. And even if students do experiment, I am not sure the feedback is as extensive as it is with third or first person narratives. Thus, budding writers don't try and stick with what they have been taught.
