This is similar to a Digital Twin. A digital twin is a virtual asset that mimics the physical system. Its main challenges is the (1) computational speed and (2) accuracy. It needs to rely on light models that can run in real time; machine learning and data driven models are suitable here. And on the other hand, it needs to be accuracy enough to reflect the real, physical behavior of the system. A compromise between speed and accuracy is required and challenging.

Your control systems are as good as their processing speeds. With real-time controls at process plants especially, the less the lag, the better the control. While developing the terms and conditions for software purchase, it must be ensured by the project team that they include the processing time and acceptable tolerances - preferably less than the existing or at least equal. In 1980 we installed a DCS system for our pulp mill. I believe the first in the industry. The visual side (control room) was all digital 0-10, 0-100, the process side was all analog, e.g., valves, motors, instrumentation. While the maintenance staff, instrumentation especially, grasped the concept, operators and other skills had some difficulty making the connection (i/o). We hired the project lead from the OEM for a couple of years to help us through the transition on site, including troublshooting, PMs, operator and maintenance training. It was a worthwhile investment.

Not everyone is a software engineer; thus, a simple and usable User Interface (UI) is required to enable the user to benefit from the embedded software to the max. With touch screens, nice graphics, and interactive interfaces, building an effective UI become more attainable.

This is my biggest pet peeve with mechanical engineering control systems. Mechanical engineers design amazing UI's for other mechanical engineers. We want to see every little thing going on in the system and be able to adjust it. However, most mechanical control UI is not being used by engineers but Operators who want nothing to do with the UI and just want the system to "work". It's critical to understand how the Operator uses (and abuses) the UI to do their job. If the UI only gets in their way they will never use it. Does the Operator need to see the lower and upper set point of the 3rd oil pressure sensor, or do they just want to know when oil pressure is high and how to fix it?

From a macro, organisation wide perspective, the UI platform should be customisable and flexible to suit different functions for different disciplines, while maintaining an underlying theme From a micro, end user POV, the interface must be simple, specific and with as flat a learning curve as possible Some operations will have more intermediate steps with varying degrees of complexity Critical functions must have clear warnings, alarms and double-checks built in to the interface, whereas complex/ variable tasks may need a more intuitive and user-changeable options

7.Updates Softwares have new updates or versions every year mostly. The software installed should be useful in increasing productivity. The updates should be very less or only should be done only if it's necessary. It should add value to the output.
