Another essential aspect of urban design is to engage communities and stakeholders in the planning and design process. Urban design projects can foster social inclusion, participation, and empowerment by involving the people who live, work, and use the urban spaces. For example, the Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project in Seoul removed an elevated highway and restored a natural stream that runs through the city center. The project involved extensive public consultation and participation, and created a vibrant and accessible public space that improved the environmental, economic, and social conditions of the city. As a landscape architect, you can engage communities by listening to their needs, preferences, and aspirations, and by co-creating solutions that reflect their values and identities.

It very easy to sit at the drawing board or laptop and spend hours designing. But designing for whom? People. Therefore they should have a say even before you start conceiving ideas. The best designs are those that satisfy user experience, not the most beautiful.

Urban design is multifaceted and as such, it engenders collaborations, social inclusion, social engineering and communal partnership. I remember conceptualising and leading a team of multidisciplinary professionals on an international market project in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. This project ensembled a team of experts from the lead team (architectural) to structural engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, quantity surveying, land surveying, and media teams. We collaborated with the indigenes (coming from 3 different villages), government and the off takers (being the market women and men - endusers). The government gave the certificate of occupancy for the land and the villages provided security and labour.

3 Enhance diversity

Urban design projects can also celebrate and respect the cultural, historical, and ecological diversity of urban places. Yes, urban designcan be a diversity enhancer. In the international market project, which I led the team of experts, we were able to produce a neighbourhood planning system that allowed for easy access and exits to the market. Security was well planned with specific gates for entries and no exits. The landscape was mad adaptable and inclusive to the existing road network in the villages. The local residents were part and parcel of the concept evolution taking into consideration their circulation and traffic problems on the existing roads and the drainage systems.

4 Promote sustainability

A fourth important lesson from urban design is to promote sustainability and resilience in urban systems. Urban design projects can reduce the environmental impact of cities, improve the quality of life of urban dwellers, and prepare for the effects of climate change and other uncertainties. Urban design projects can also integrate natural elements and processes into urban spaces, creating green infrastructure that provides multiple benefits and services. For example, the Sponge City Initiative in China aims to improve urban water management by creating permeable, absorbent, and green urban landscapes that can capture, store, and reuse rainwater, reducing flooding and pollution. As a landscape architect, you can promote sustainability by applying ecological principles and practices to urban design.

Urban design promotes sustainability. In the international market project I led, we ensured that the built up area was not more than 30percent and the area for hard surfaces was far less than one for the soft surfaces. We introduced large ares of green infrastructure in the design. The internal road network was made to incorporate green life and a blue infrastructure was incorporated at the entry point of the market. Outdoor sitting areas were incorporated in the lawns for direct communication with nature. All these were to promote sustainability through international market project that spanned three communities. Provision of the recycling of the waste generated from the market was made and solar lighting systems were incorporated.

5 Connect spaces

A fifth valuable lesson from urban design is to connect spaces and networks in urban areas. Urban design projects can improve the accessibility, mobility, and connectivity of urban spaces, creating seamless and efficient flows of people, goods, and information. Urban design projects can also link different scales and levels of urban spaces, creating coherent and integrated urban systems. For example, the Smart City Project in Barcelona uses technology and data to connect urban infrastructure, services, and citizens, improving the efficiency, transparency, and participation of urban governance and management. Urban design can serve as connector. In the market design, which I led the team of experts, we were able to connect different business people from different states in Nigeria to converge in Uyo. The design improved the road network and drainage systems of 3 communities. This is a typical way an urban design can connect.

A sixth and final lesson from urban design is to experiment and learn from urban spaces. Urban design projects can provide opportunities for testing, learning, and adapting urban solutions, creating flexible and responsive urban spaces. Urban design projects can also generate and share knowledge and insights about urban issues and trends, creating a culture of learning and innovation in urban spaces.
