There may be an available job description that you can refer to or you can always reference the original job posting to which you applied for some direction as to what kinds of priorities you might be able to ask about. Priorities are always going to be important and front of mind. If you have a list of tasks, you'll want to ask for direction from your manager if any task is more time-sensitive than another.

Something I've learned over the course of multiple roles is how helpful KPIs can be, especially when they are clear and stay consistent. While life at a startup or small company will mean that KPIs will change as the company grows, if they are changing too often then it will be difficult to build consistent processes, ensure those processes are set up for long term success, and they will allow you to build quality momentum in the role. In both my personal experience as well as what I've seen with colleagues, when KPIs are not clear, putting a confident effort into work can be challenging. When KPIs are vague or change too often, employees are at risk of becoming disengaged or, even worse, frustrated with their role and manager.

During the interview process you will hopefully get the opportunity to both speak with the hiring manager about the culture they hope to create and speak with future teammates about what it's like to work at XYZ company. But what's better than speaking with current employees, talking to ones who have recently left! While you do need to take any experiences that are shared with a grain of salt, when you get a chance to speak with employees who are no longer beholden to the company you will likely get more transparent information. Even if you don't have a current contact who works at the company, don't be afraid to reach out to past employees on LinkedIn to see if they are willing to share their experience.

To understand company culture, research LinkedIn and company pages for employee testimonials, posts, and events. Look for patterns in reviews on platforms like Glassdoor. Engage in informational interviews with current or former employees to gain firsthand insights. Pay attention to company values, mission statements, and employee diversity initiatives. Observe interactions during the interview process for clues about communication style and teamwork dynamics.
