1 Data integrity

Data Integrity challenges within Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) and their interfacing networks can be categorized into two types: on-board and off-board checks. On-board checks involve encryption, authentication, and verification, ensuring internal data remains uncompromised. Off-board checks, like Blockchain technology, safeguard external interactions, such as between an AV and an EV charger, maintaining the integrity of both entities. The choice between using solely on-board checks or a hybrid approach depends on the ASIL level (ISO 26262) and the sensitivity of the end-user functions served. This area holds potential for groundbreaking concepts and innovations in the near future!

AVs collect and store a lot of personal and sensitive information about the passengers, drivers, destinations, routes, preferences, and behaviors. This information can be used for legitimate purposes, such as improving the AVs' functionality, safety, and user experience, but it can also be exploited by unauthorized parties for identity theft, fraud, blackmail, or surveillance. To protect data privacy, you need to follow the principles of data minimization, anonymization, and consent. You also need to apply access control, encryption, and auditing policies for the data, and comply with the relevant data protection laws and regulations.

Let's think about how a fiber optic works! An optoelectronic source converts electrical data to light, thus optically isolating the electrical circuits! Interestingly similar concepts like 'Data Tokenization' can be thought of! Let's say a purpose-built (cabin climate & lighting, choosing songs or others) digital token is allocated to an individual which remains valid with time can be refreshed when compromised or when time expires! From an attacker PoV, he gets access to only a digital token without any personal traces to head back. This is another fascinating way to see the future of 'Data Privacy' and thereby not bargaining the performance of personalized features within the AVs!

3 Data availability

AVs depend on the availability of data to function properly and safely. If the data is lost, damaged, or inaccessible due to hardware failures, software errors, network disruptions, or cyberattacks, the AVs may experience malfunctions, collisions, or breakdowns. To ensure data availability, you need to design and maintain a robust and resilient database architecture that can handle high volumes, velocities, and varieties of data. You also need to use backup, recovery, and replication strategies for the data, and implement fault tolerance, load balancing, and failover mechanisms for the database systems.

With data expansion, innovative strategies are essential: DLoP (Data Loss Predictor): A must-have algorithm in critical AV systems for early data loss detection. Just-In-Time Data Reserves: Ensures AV systems have immediate data backups from nearby ECUs (e.g., GW ECU) for swift replication during failures. Data Integrity Measures: Involves storing data checksums (MD5, SHAs) in various locations to maintain data authenticity during recovery. These are a few of the techniques highlighting the growing opportunities for innovation in data availability in AVs! Still, more to uncover.

AVs involve multiple stakeholders, such as manufacturers, operators, regulators, customers, and third-party providers, who have different roles, responsibilities, and interests in the data.
