What are the biggest misconceptions about delegating tasks in supervisory roles?

Releasing control is against most people's nature. Leaders allow individuals to develop and create their own way to solve the problem. This approach allows for the employees personal growth. Dictating and controlling every aspect stifles creativity and opportunity for developing the next batch of problem solvers and leaders. This doesn't mean you can't help by setting guard rails so they do not completely fail. Failure can create good learning opportunities if provided there's a soft landing. Leaders should know how and what to delegate according to each person's strengths and areas for growth.

When I became a team leader, my mentor said this to me…. “DELEGATE”. I asked no questions and I just did, heck he hired me. For that role and my first manager role. Best advice ever. Delegating as a leader shows you have trust in your team. You know who to give what to in order to get the job done effectively and efficiently. I was rated on how well my team did not me as an individual person. If you have control issues then you have trust and probably communication issues as well and that makes an ineffective leader and insufficient team. Moral will decline and work production.

Myth: Leaders should delegate everything! This is not true! And while delegation is important, it’s more important that when delegating, you are delegating tasks to the right people. A leader should know the strengths of their associates and delegate task to staff as a “stretch” opportunities to aid associates on their growth journey!

Contrary to the myth of loosing control, in my experience it means having control. I only delegate tasks which I have command over. A few interactions before, during and after completion of the task will signal the delegate of a shared responsibility rather than a lapse in knowledge base or technical know-how.

It is misconceived that weak people use others to complement their shortcomings through delegation. I think a weak person would rather avoid sharing responsibility due to fear of losing out to a subordinate. A good leader rather uses delegation to train others to become leaders themselves. No weak person will attempt this act.

Delegating is a sign of security, mental fortitude, knowledge, leadership and seeing the bigger picture. Many hands make light work.

Effective supervisors should utilize transformative leadership traits via emotional intelligence and individualized considerations. Delegating tasks based on subordinate skills, needs, and potential are all essential. Understanding which subordinate with benefit the most from a task requires two-way conversations. This provides not only the “What” but also the “Why.”

One thing I have found helpful in delegation is laying out the task to the delegate, allowing the delegate to express how to accomplish the task and then giving my input. Discussing the task with the delegate prior to its execution ensures its effectiveness. Delegation can therefore not be a one-way process.

Delegation alone does not guarantee results - provide resources and collaboration too. Use stretch assignments to build new skills. Find the balance between trusting your team and guiding them to success.

Delegating a task to a team member is as effective as knowing your team members and their individual capabilities. Each task requires specific skill set and strengths and each team member has a unique one. A one-size-fits-all approach cannot be used if the best is expected out of each team member, delegated to perform a task.

Take note that delegation is situational. You may frame it in a way that answers to whom will you give the "responsibility" and/or "authority" to a specific task might help you decide. The responsibility and authority given therefore is based on the consideration of the persons ability, willingness, and the type of task at hand.

The toughest duty as a supervisor is deciding what and how to delegate. Delegating is against basic human nature of being in control - that’s why it requires deliberate intent and effort to implement. It’s also a skill that needs to be mastered as you move from a individual contributor to doing through others - and again it’s difficult to let go and trust others to do the job the same way you would have done it. Trust, transparency and creating psychological safety (to be able to speak up in a safe zone) facilitate delegation in my experience.

Delegating means you trust your team, however you need to know what, when and how to delegate, people need to be free and feel safe on the same time, but also when to come to ask support to avoid risks for the business . When you delegate you need to give also the freedom to that person to fail, so as manager and accountable for that task you take this in consideration when you’re delegating.

Delegation of tasks is a form of training your replacement. The next time you have tasks to accomplish ask yourself, “is this something only I can accomplish?” If the answer is, “No” then consider delegating the task. Decentralization of leadership is key to team success. Effective autonomy is cultivated through trust and effective delegation.

Delegation can become a double edged sword... Subordinates will assume you can't do the task and are filtering the responsibility down and taking credit for the work done. Not to mention reinforcing the idea that you sit in an office and now do even less work as you have farmed it down to the lower levels. This is where you leave the boss hat behind and you put your leadership hat on. The idea is to have them just about jump to take on the task by sweetening the proverbial carrot ever so slightly than normal, In conversations, mention the personal satisfaction that you get when completing such tasks and how it makes you grow not only as a person but in a skill set too. Follow the lines as if it's what you want to hear from your boss.

Some companies have unions with contracts and a lot of agreements in place and one big one is that the supervisors job is actually to delegate and that’s it! He is the first person on the scene when a maintenance problem occurs and has to call personnel to that job according to line-ups and things like that, and if the supervisor decides he can fix the problem or tries to , most times he will land confrontations from the employees, as he is considered management .
