Without question, if there's no magic in the story, there can be no magic in the film. The Polar Express and The Snowman are pretty magical but without the story of the bell that grownups can no longer hear, or the story of a snowman that can fly, technology isn't going to save you. This might be counterintuitive to most of the comments here but I would highly recommend you read Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot essay. The sense of awe and wonder it evokes is inspiring. Two absolutely essential ingredients in film magic.

First i think the story which is the most important element and the characters and environments play a role in directing the visual fx style. Your characters must fit the environment and the theme should be maintained over the duration of the film or scenes as the case may be.

Visual effects are meant to extend our reality into imagination. Imagination starts with a story, so the magic really starts there. My approach is to try to create this magical atmosphere in reality and add visual effects where reality stops.

There are many movies with stunning VFX, but lack of story. VFX should be just a make-up for a strong and good story. I remember back in 80's, 90's there were excellent movies, but the VFX was none or very few. In nutshell: VFX should help the story not overtaking it.

In my experience, VFX should be used to enhance the story and create a connection between audience and story. In today’s film industry, VFX has become more of a way to show scale and vastness of the story - to WOW viewers. Unfortunately, this does not always service the story in a meaningful way, and in return the story suffers and fails to connect the audience. VFX can be great when used effectively, and can be useful in immersing an audience in a reality unlike our own, but it should not be taken lightly or used to essentially “show off” the budget.

Since the early days of cinema some of the most effective ways for filmmakers to create new worlds and to transform the current one on the silver screen were matte paintings. The two-dimensionality of film has always favored the blending yof oil paintings on glass (mostly of fantasy landscapes and embellished architecture) with real landscapes. The use of these matte paintings has also influenced digital editing and even 3D world building. While painting integration has become three-dimensional and sophisticated in their texturing and realism, their illusions still work best by mixing them with actual elements of the “real” world.

Think Christopher Nolan or Steven Spielberg or Ridley Scott or believe it or not, James Cameron...they only use digital effects to COMPLIMENT what the practical is already doing. This is why 30 years later, Jurassic Park still looks insane, and 40 years on, so does Terminator. Always prepare as much as you can physically/practically, and shoot for intention of telling the story. Then, the VFX department will have a much easier time making their part of the story remain undetectable :)

The purpose of VFX is to enable the audience to get a visual clarity of the Directors perspective. Blending VFX with real life art/setting is the best way to go. Too much of VFX makes it fictional and that may not augur well with the intention. If the setting is surreal VFX is good, if it is real than minimal VFX blended is the way to go.
