What are the best ways to use data to inform UX design decisions as a PM?

Defining goals and metrics is crucial when using data to inform UX design decisions as a PM. Here are points to consider: 1. In the above context PM should set goals and the metrics which helps in taking decisions for the UX design. Goals should be aligned with enhancing user experience, conversion rates and user satisfaction. Metrics helps to derive insights, prioritize design enhancements, and ensure a user-centric approach. Together, these goals and metrics foster a focus on data-driven decisions within the design workflow, ultimately enriching user experiences and deepening engagement.

I personally prefer starting with a hypothesis almost always. Since it sets a line for us to be proved right or wrong. Once the hypothesis, the goal and related metrics are decided, we can move forward to find out are we actually right and if not then how to improve the UX.

They say you can’t improve what you can’t measure. If you know me, you know that I was an Interaction Designer for the early part of my career. Design is subjective and there is nothing more refreshing than bringing some data to make product development more objective. I brought this data focus from my designer days when a lot of the feedback was qualitative and spear-headed product analytics adoption at previous companies, tool-agnostic including software like Heap, Amplitude, FullStory, Looker, Tableau, Node.

It is important to be curious about the data. As in a recent post by @deepak krishnan, the reason for drop offs on screen A for eg, might be an earlier screen which could have created some misperception, not necessarily the screen A itself. Therefore once the quantitative aspect is thoroughly studied we can move to user testing to find out what exactly caused the observed behaviour.

It's all about data. We do not build for our pleasure. Rather, we build to solve users' problems. One of the ways to do this is by using a product analytics tool like Pendo to gain insights into your design and see how users interact with it. Another way is to involve customers in the development stage with the aim of getting feedback...after all, they are the ones we're building for.

What people actually do and what they think they do are rarely the same thing. This is why building what people tell you they want is a terrible idea, and why products with roadmaps prioritized by sales often result in a graveyard of features that provide little to no actual impact or value. This doesn’t mean feedback isn’t important - it’s incredibly valuable. But it is even more important to compare that feedback with their actual behavior in the platform. By comparing qualitative feedback with quantitative data, you can make a much more educated assumption about what’s actually happening.

Use data to identify where to talk to users, but always talk to users before interpreting data. Data and user research work best hand in hand.

Define what data you need. Does quantitative data is enough or also need qualitative. For both cases, what exact data you will need. In what way the data to be collected: observing users or asking them directly? What is the tone (formal, funny, friendly) for collecting the data (feedback form, survey, etc).

Start by setting clear UX goals that aligns with your end customers. Once goals are mapped, follow below: 1. Collect meaningful data 2. Deep dive into analysis Utilize tools like Hotjar or Mixpanel to comprehensively track user interactions. Capture meaningful data points related to user behavior, preferences, and pain points. 3. Iterate based on Insights gathered

I believe this is one of the important steps in ensuring that the UX designs delivered by the UX team are as per goals and satisfy the defined metrics. Now as a PM there are few steps to this - 1. UX team by default respond easily to user flows or user's perspective when interacting with the system. As a PM you need to ensure that you think yourself as a user of the system and how would you interact with it. Once you are in that zone it becomes easy to break down and visualize data from the user's perspective. 2. The next step is put those user flows in stories which are not pure technical data but instead act as a gateway into user's thought. 3. Last step is to provide feedback and update the stories based on updated understanding.

My simple take here will be data provide information of user pattern. uX designers can identify how and what user looks for. Data helped UX design to be user friendly and based on user behaviour.

- Collect the data - Deep analysis of results, make sure there are no abnormalities - Make sure all biases are eliminated. If it is an A/B test then compare before and after or do A/A Test to make sure there were no other factors affecting it. - Visualize the data with dashboards/graphs/heatmaps for better understanding.

In my experience, first starts with study the data available and cross check with the business questions needed to resolve, then observes the data pattern and verify it with the information from multiple sources repeatedly to get to the findings and recommendations.

Ideas without data are just opinions and often in design discussions as a PM you can find yourself stuck with designers around what decision to take. Some of the ways to unblock yourself are: - A/B Testing: Compare different design versions and check the conversion - Heatmaps and Session Recordings: Watch user sessions and interactions to understand real-time experiences - Usability Testing: Observe real users to pinpoint pain points and improvements It's not just about collecting data but interpreting it in the context of user needs and business goals. Regularly iterate and refine based on the insights gained to improve the product

I've always found it helpful to review the design with the end user as early as possible. It helps us validate the hypothesis and the assumptions behind design decisions It also creates an excitement among the target users and helps businesses define the success metrics. Since, you're making users a part of the product development process, there's a greater sense of loyalty and reduced risk of surprise Lastly, it is very cost effective due to lesser roll back on design decisions.

- Validate feedback and decided the level of "painfulness", what really needed to be change and what is some random idea for improvement. - Design improvements - Conduct Usability Testing - Iterate and deploy imporvements

The goal of the use case should be identified before the design and it is okay to change the design as long as user is able to meet the goal after using the application.

Per Pendo, 80% of features are rarely used or used at all and as product managers, our primary duty is to deliver the most value to our users/customers and business. This is where data, both qualitative and quantitative, can be immensely helpful in validating designs and insuring the team is driving towards desired outcomes prior to incurring the cost of development.

Looking at data is one way to understand a problem, but it's really important to look at it in different ways. For example, listening to stories from customers can be helpful. It's especially good to check these stories with the stakeholders who work directly with the customers. Doing this helps make designs that are better for both the customers and the business.

In my experience, the outcome of the work is better with user involvement as collaboration cross functional will help reveal the hidden rules and perspectives.

In data-driven design, involving users and stakeholders early-on is crucial to ensure the success and effectiveness of a produt or feature. By involving them from the beginning, we can gather valuable insights and feedback that help shape the design process. Engaging users and stakeholders allows us to understand their needs, preferences, and pain points, enabling us to create user-centered solutions. By incorporating their perspectives, we can ensure that our design decisions align with their expectations and goals. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of ownership and buy-in among users and stakeholders, ultimately leading to more successful outcomes.

Ditch instincts for insights! My one rule is to resist relying on gut feelings in data-driven design. Opt for a collaborative approach instead, and try to form a coalition of insights with users and stakeholders.

Data-driven design is not a one-time event, and data-informed thinking is not a one-size-fits-all approach. To learn and improve continuously, you can: ? Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and evolving user behaviors ? Analyze the user experience of competitors and industry leaders ? Work closely with UX/UI designers to ensure they have access to relevant data and insights. Collaborate on design decisions, validate design hypotheses, and iterate based on user feedback

Data-driven design is like baking a cake using customer reviews. Imagine you bake a chocolate cake and customers say it's not chocolatey enough. So, you tweak the recipe to add more cocoa and try again. Next, they might say it's too bitter, so you adjust the sugar. This iterative process, based on customer feedback (data), helps you perfect the cake over time, just as data-driven design refines a product to meet user preferences.

Data is key for learn and improve continuously. Start from an hypothesis and using A/B tests to figure out how are the user behavior and establish a model with feedback. The data will be key to evolve in a cycle of features improvements as well as learn and improve.

It is important not to improve the UX for the sake of delight always, yes in some cases that is the goal. But ideally it should be something tangible and measurable so that it can further help in subsequent iterations.

To really reap the benefits of data in our work as PMs, we must start with adoption, and adoption starts with showing the value of data to our team. Acknowledge that this is a steep learning curve and yet another thing to add to the long to-do list; show how it can personally benefit the person and benefit the team/company; find a way to appeal to their intrinsic motivation. Show the power of predictive analytics a lot of these apps do nowadays. Your first few projects may require hands-on coaching, or a couple of co-working sessions. I've had success bringing in folks from Heap and Amplitude for on-site trainings or going their offices (plus, it's cool to meet people who make the software.)

A lens to look at UX, I found helpful is to understand why we're improving UX We do it often for the below reasons - To capitalise on present user behaviour - To reduce user efforts in the journey - To create a new experience for an old product - To create a new product & its experience - To target a new user base Having a high-level perspective helps determine the amount of ambiguity you're heading into and how much design iterations are expected. This helps in planning the efforts and taking hiring decisions

Don't go looking for answers. It creates bias. Let your questions come up after you've been through the bits and numbers. Though the data might sometime scream at you so some trends can't be ignored.
