What are the best ways to speed up video editing?

The simplest way to improve the speed of your video editing is to upgrade your machine (assuming you are already fluent with your video editing software). All processing, rendering and video effects depend highly on your computer hardware speed. Whichever software you are familiar using, it will be faster if you upgrade to a faster machine. This is especially noticeable with the new Apple M1, M2 and M3 processors, based on Reduced Instructions sets. Windows based computers will benefit from installing faster GPU. Not sure when will Windows switch to ARM based processors (if ever), but certainly no speed gain without paying some $$$.

The right software is often the software you are most familiar with. Remember- you audience only sees the finished product, not your editing process. That said, take into account the type of content you are editing. If you are creating premium content, you will likely want a full featured software such as Adobe Premiere. If you are creating short form social media posts, maybe consider editing on your phone.

Have a database of elements already organized and pre-organized is a great time saver. While you will probably have to search for elements online or perhaps create your own, anything you can do to have elements ready to go will save time. Particularly with SFX, sound design elements, and transitional clips.

If I’m editing to music, I’ll take the music into Audition and set a series of markers to the beats and transitional points. I’ll save and export the new clip with marker references onto my timeline to have visual points to help me edit that are placed more accurately than if I placed them on my video timeline.

Keyboard shortcuts are what separate novices from power-users. Learning to speed up your workflow with shortcuts will save you hours of time over the course of a month. As a tip, search online for a keyboard shortcut cheat sheet specific to your software. Print it out and reference it as you work- you will be amazed at how quickly you will pick up the most commonly used shortcuts.

I don't know how else to edit. I'm always using keyboard shortcuts, for example 'Extend' or 'Restore default patch'. There are plenty of videos on YouTube that show you what they do and how to use them.

Here is a story for you, my dear novice editor :) I had a fantastic instructor in my editing classes. But he was very very strict. When we were doing our final editing assignment in class we were not allowed to use mouse. Yes, technically you can navigate Premiere Pro exclusively on keyboard. Most of the professionals still of course use mouse but I think it's very showing how extensive Premiere's capabilities are

Us editors tend to work alone in the sense that we don't tend to sit with other editors but if you have the chance and you are friendly with other editors, go and pick their brains or if you learn a new technique, share it!

One of the best ways to learn to edit more efficiently is to work alongside other editors. There are often a dozen ways to achieve the same effect, but some are far more time consuming than others. If you are looking to grow your skills, as a peer or coworker if you can sit with them for 30 minutes while they edit a project. You'll be amazed at how many tips and tricks you can pick up in such a short amount of time.

Use AI tools as much as you can. There are plenty of them now. But choose the most efficient ones and don't overload your software with ton of plug-ins
