What are the best ways to showcase your program coordination experience on your resume?

Better to serve on a not-for-profit board, like I had done, than to have stood still between jobs. Granted, this was awhile ago. But I was appointed Treasurer overseeing budgeting. The responsibilities emanating from my skill had included having utilized fund accounting practices, from my MPA program, which differs from financial accounting. Filled out grant applications and saw them through with a margin of success. Did other odd things like MC'ing a talent show. Trained new volunteers, brought in a new attendee or two. Along with action verbiage to buttress your resume - remember this acronym: PERT, meaning program, evaluation, research, training to fill out your resume. This might raise all the right eyebrows for the right reasons.

Adding to the above choose a particular/different example for each skill you are highlighting. In sum you will be able to showcase a variety of examples enhancing your skill set

In my view, emphasizing achievements on a resume in a generic or commonplace manner lacks impact. I advise adopting a creative and disruptive approach whenever possible. For instance, during my tenure as a sports fundraising expert, rather than vaguely mentioning the substantial funds raised, I opted to highlight the number of medals secured by our athletes in the Olympic and Pan-American Games. This distinctive strategy can make your accomplishments stand out in a more engaging way.

Mapping skills and experience to suit the needs and expectations of the job and presenting a tailored resume is an important first step. A well written resume makes the first impression. An applicant may have multiple skills some of which may not be immediately relevant to the job under consideration and may not impact assessment of the candidate's suitability. While it may add value to the candidature, it should not distract. Therefore, segregation and prioritisation of features that create maximum impact must be kept in mind. It is important to indicate other positives as well but let not those skills overshadow the requirements of the job.

I do not assign top priority to a cover letter. For the HR person short listing candidates, skills and capabilities that the job requires, is of importance. Only when the resume is interesting enough to attract further scrutiny will the selector go down the path of the Cover letter. The Cover letter however, is important. It should highlight specific features of the resume and speak of anything that lends value to what is stated in the resume. The Cover letter must be interesting and must be used only if necessary. Not every resume need have a Cover letter.

The cover letter for each organization must be persuasive. It must modify or exhort what accomplishments your resume states. You need to get your foot in the door for interview(s), and naturally, employment. Clearly demonstrate that you well understand and relate to, or empathize with, their clientele group. Show, too, that you're intensely interested in making a full impact. If the job demands a higher level, explain how you can be the 'change agent' to better fulfill organizational mission and possibly to expand it. Further, if you know influential types, explain how you can best raise funds, from their auspices, arrange legacy or bequests, or initiatiate a new source of donors.

The cover letter is a great place to highlight your achievements and convey why they would translate well into the position you are applying to. Utilize this space to convey how effective you are as a project manager.

There might be some rarefied terms in the type of not-for-profit you serve, or propose to endeavor. Spell checker, grammar checkers might emanate an errata on resume scanners. Speaking from experience, I was on the board of a non-profit after wrapping up with E*Trade Financial. It's my very firm belief that the odd ampersand character made a very deleterious difference ! It wasn't my credentials that were anything but meaningful. Realizing that proofreading, tweaking, time and again, cannot be underemphasized. Then ask friends, trusted former associates, or go online, most certainly including LinkedIn, to see where you stand with advice, suggestions, and very worthwhile feedback. Perhaps replicate text in job descriptions you endeavor.

Errors- spelling, grammar, punctuation, or formatting can ruin all the effort made in writing a resume. Indeed these errors can undermine your professionalism and credibility as a program coordinator. Primarily errors reflect carelessness and a casual attitude. Must be avoided.

You might have a clear passion or affinity with a clientele group you feel comfortable serving. Once you've settled in the the organization, the group has disilushioning backlash or unanticipated consequences. What do you do ? Well, you can take the good with the bad, and all the in-betweens, but it can't affect your interim performance. This doesn't mean you should roll with the punches. Act, but don't over-react. Be looking for another not for profit which you'd best fit in.
