What are the best ways to show your professionalism and credibility as a business analyst?

Be consistent in what you do and how you do it. Do not get stuck in area you are anyway good, but Move out of comfort zone with curiousity. Be the neutral person who summairzes meeting main threads and check actively afterwards that all agree to your assesment. Be the one asking consistently the stupid questions and admit when something is beyond your current knowledge and fill that gap afterwards. Understand your Role as BA being similar to knowledge acquisition helper- teacher like without being bossy or nosy.

Start by actively listening to stakeholders so that you can understand their needs and pain points, which enables you to become the voice of the customers. By demonstrating a clear understanding of the business problem, you establish credibility as a BA trusted to deliver the right results on the project.

There are several key ways to exhibit your professionalism in the role of a business analyst: 1-Domain knowledge that includes understanding the business and continuous learning. 2-Effective Communication(KIS Rule i.e. Keep it Simple) especially active listening. 3-Analytical skills from using data analytical tools like Excel or SQL etc. to Problem-solving approach(breaking the complex problem into smaller and manageable portions. 4- Time Management. 5-Interpersonal skills( Putting yourself in their shoes to comprehend their needs and concerns better, diplomatically resolve conflicts, and teamwork).

In my experience, it is the most crucial aspect of business analysis and any job that requires collaboration among people from different backgrounds. Since you connect business to the technical community, you need to know both side of the house and their language well. You should have the right tools to communicate, have an effective mechanism to prepare for discussion, and open channels for follow-up conversations. I found this job to be one of the most satisfying, where you help businesses achieve their goals, and you make the technical team feel like they contributed to meaningful goals and gave their work a purpose. The reverse is true. Bad communication can make the business difficult and the technical team discontent and frustrated.

In one of my experiences, I have seen sometimes a business analyst might tend to arm-twist developers to make things work in the short term and not care for long-term scenarios despite warnings. It might work in short term, but in long it erodes the trust of business and it is even more difficult to earn their trust back once it is lost. On some occassion for vested interest there may be temptation to use sub-par solution or tech while there is a better one is present. Yet again, unless you do very best for buisness and help them achieve their goal, you don’t do justice to you job and don’t grow.

A bit of an out-of-the-box non-stock answer, but I found that I get INSTANT credibility when I look at the situation I have been asked to analyze and I ask 'does your business have a problem with [specific area they did not identify as part of the general situation]' When I ask a question like that (because I already know the answer) it proves that I understand the business as well as the situation and there is no quicker way to get credibility. The business team looks at business analysts as experts in tech, and the technical team looks at business analysts as experts in business. So, the business analyst has the responsibility for acquiring expertise in both fields to do justice to their role and make sure they contribute to the business goals of the organization. In addition to specific business and technology domain experts, business analysts need to keep pace with what is happening surrounding other similar industries and techs, find opportunities for cross-collaboration, or adopt upcoming trends. They may be a pioneer in their industry.

Ask questions if you don't know something even if they seem stupid. The stupid question is the question not asked that leads a project down the wrong track. Learn from everyone you meet and be prepared to be humble. Part of being a BA is that you are an SME in a subject but there is always more to learn.

As well as doing a 'Lessons Learned' session with the project team, try doing one for your own role on a project or initiative. Seek feedback from those you worked closely with, and make sure you are recognising your strengths, as well as areas you might want to develop further. Once you've identified those areas, then you can look for training/certifications that will help fill in those gaps.

A BA's goal should be HOURS of boredom. In meetings, we should see the ends before anyone else and sit patiently until the goal is generally apparent. You will be considered a reliable Business Analyst when you inspire confidence in your partners. Having too many loose-ends in your time and resources is not inspiring. "A place for everything and everything in its place" makes a great start. In daily procedures, PLAN to take the long way around. Do not look for shortcuts. You will then take adequate time to MAKE the places into which everything will fit, and that will grow like the proverbial snowball into good habits.

A typical delivery passes through many hands, and a business analyst could be one link in the chain or orchestrator, depending on the organizational setup and culture. It is paramount that as a buisness analyst you understand the prime goal is to add value to business and ideally there should be no misalignment. Yet the priorities, structural silos, ineffective communications and budgetary allocation can and often cause the misalignment of goals. Business analyst need to understand all these undercurrents and ensure alignment.

Ensure you undertake a full stakeholder analysis prior to any engagement, but keep it dynamic - you can always add more stakeholders as they get uncovered. Think about the marginalised voices, who might benefit from this change but also, who might be negatively impacted? Trying to see the world from multiple perspectives is key to success.

Learn to tread gently. If someone says something daft, don't say so directly as they will mentally block what you have to say. Try something like "Let me make sure I have understood this..." then recount your understanding to help them see why you "don't understand". Either it is realised the other party is missing something or they dredge up some chunk of intrinsic knowledge that fills in the gap. Either outcome is OK. Also, if you are a young BA working with an old-timer like me (59) please listen. Don't assume that because there is snow on the roof there is no technological/business fire in the hearth! It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoy playing with graphics. The GIMP software is a tremendous help along with old-fashioned animation practices, which can be done entirely within products like PowerPoint. Adding an animation or a customized graphic has more than once led a VP/Director to send me or my boss a commendation. ALWAYS stay on target. Your presentation needs to please the audience, not you. For an "Us vs Them" situation I consulted a Psychologist/Artist friend who said Pea-Soup-Green is about the least popular color. Everything on "Their" side of the slides was akin to Pea-Soup while "Our" side was everything but. We got the vote and an "attaboy" for our presentation.

Many BAs struggle with this because our role doesn't produce tangible deliverables such as developers or UX/UI designers. So here's what I do. Conclude the meeting by reviewing actions to be completed as a result of the meeting.

Try to find & solve problems that have become status quo or the user themselves may not be aware of. Collaborate closely with Tech teams: Grasp technical limits and opportunities. Navigating such interests displays diplomacy and problem-solving skills. Keep stakeholders engaged: Maintain a feedback loop for requirement alignment. Knowing your audience/Business Partners and understanding how the information you’re relaying will impact and benefit them is key to successful engagement. I make it a point to ask questions or better yet I shadow other teams to learn their processes so that I can better align my data cross functionally. My process improvements are better received and typically implemented immediately.
